So susan has it in her mind that the new boat should be a "pretty color". so I dont know a thing about painting a boat. what are my options? will I be able to cover up the black strip?

Tom-

Best way to repaint a fiberglass boat is with a two part linear polyurethane paint, rolled on with a roller after careful sanding, cleaning, and masking.

This type of paint is very flexible, won't crack or peel, and has a long flow time, so in flows out flat, making a smooth, shiny, and non-textured surface, despite the roller application.

Marine dealers have color charts, and may even be able to custom tint it, but about that I'm not sure. It may not accept universal pigments.

As for a "Pretty" color (read feminine), I 'll suggest the following paint scheme, which, I've heard, is also the hot new color scheme for Coho flashers for next year (2011).

Perhaps the best way to paint a boat is to take it to a yard with good reputation, specify the color, open your wallet and come back later!! :wink

How to actually go about the painting depends on the quality desired. If you want it to look like the gel coat, have it done by a professional. If you will settle for less quality and a lower price, you can do your own. The preparation is most important. The higher the gloss of the final coat, the smoother and better the preparation must be. The high gloss LP paint will show every defect in the surface and every speck of dust.

Once you paint, there will be no going back to the the original gel coat. You might consider graphics or a complete vinyl graphic cover over the black stripe.

Tom, this paint scheme would surely hide that black stripe!!

love that first boat. Susan is thinking about a solid blue hull like the ranger tugs with a white top and some graphic on the upper house. I dont think i could do this my self unless i find a long term inside shop to use. we store out side and could not do it here. If we had a place to do it inside then it would be doalbe for us, alot of work but doable. I like idea of a yard doing it but not the idea of opening my wallet that wide. Iam a cheap bastard at heart.

I figured you would, being an ex Marine and all that.... :)

Seriously, cracking the wallet is a lot easier than covering black gel coat.

Be prepared to open the wallet very wide for a complete hull repaint. This is a time consuming task that requires a lot of prep work and the right tools. Cut any corners, and evreyone who ever sees the boat will know it, especially at resale time.

I thought there were no "ex" marines, only "former" marines....

never mind Don, he thinks a boat that is designed to sink is a good Idea

Wow, no membership necessary, a great tutorial. Now if we can teach a "former marine" how to follow directions, he'll have it made...

I thought that was all marines were able to do; "follow directions (orders)

Further evidence - once a marine, always a marine.

Wonder if the reply to an order in the Marines is also...."Yes, Dear"....

Sargent's hate it when you call then dear.

She's not a Sargent, she's an LTG and don't you forget it...
