Removing wipers

Was out there today trying to get the entire wiper arm free from threaded rod. Took out the allen set screw,tried prying off but no luck. Whats the trick to removing them? Im trying to locate entire arm or wiper blade half of it. Im going to Napa tomorrow and looking on west marine also going to local boating stores,thought I could just take entire wiper arm with me. The fiberglass brim visor makes it hard to work on.

Larry, the most "civilized" method I have found is to use a small 2 jawed puller such as used for battery terminals.

Another method used is to take a large screwdriver or some type of prybar and apply pressure against the end of the arm close to the shaft. Sometimes pushing down against the spring tension on the other side of the arm will break it loose. If not thread the nut back on flush with the end of the shaft and while applying pressure with the prybar gently tap the end of the shaft with a brass hammer.

The least "civilized" method I have seen involves using a slide hammer which will remove the arm but should only be tried by trained professionals as there is often collateral damage. :twisted:

I think there is two allen screws that need to be removed.
 
This topic often brings up some real frustration experienced by our members.

One form of help comes in the form of a puller tool designed for the job, although a battery cable remover can also do the job, as pointed out above.

Thanks all,just received a replacement wiper lower half. Twenty three dollars for wiper half, entire arm $48. Ordered it from a local boat store. This looks like the right one ,but its missing the little metal tab that the Phillips screw goes thru. So you cant connect it. Thinking of buying best epoxy and gluing it. Not sure if that's a good idea,shouldnt be this tuff to fix this. Guess its trying to test my patience. After all this they weren't even cleaning windows good enough,need to get them to be tighter on window.

I would try shooting some spray penetrating oil in the oil where the set screw/s that you removed. If you get them off I would make sure to use marine rated never seize on the shafts for the next time. I would also lube the pivot points on the wiper arm. If they are stiff they will make it harder for the spring to apply pressure to the wiper itself. I would also do a couple coats of Rainex on the windshields. The Rainex reduces the need for wipers by a lot.

The Marinco 11.5 wiper blade worked #33004 it snapped in place ,works without needing phillip screw.
