Removing Water Heater

That sealant is Bostic . The factory used it on ALL joints, and it not only doesn't help, it prevents the nylon hose from seating on the barbs. They used it to seal the hull, seal the plumbing and seal bolts. They must have bought it by the truckload.

To loosen it, just turn the hose on the fitting with a pair of plires. If it sticks, try a little heat. Don't forget to remove the goop from the fitting.

On Journey On's hot water heater, there are 4 ea. plumbing fittings as follows:
Top right-overpressure valve
Top left-hot water outlet
Bottom right- cold water inlet
Bottom left-drain valve
There are 2 fittings at the rear and these are for an engine heat exchanger. Unfortunately useless on an outboard.

I'm not sure what a RV bypass kit is, but if you still want (cold) water to the hot water faucet, I'd just trim the outlet and inlet hoses and join them with a hose barb and clamps. Don't forget to plug the overflow and drain hoses because they lead to the shower sump pump, which if it backs up can cause those hoses to overflow. Also check to see that the inner lining isn't separating on the nylon braided hose. Never seen it except on Journey On, but there it was.

Art, The white sealant that the factory used should not have been used. On my 05 25 one of the barbed fittings blew the hose with the clamp off the very first time I turned on the heater and things got warm-hot. I ended up with 20 gallons of water on the floor of the cabin as the jet pump continued to empty the water tank. Luckily the factory salesman at the time was moored next to me and we quickly found out what the problem was. he as not pleased to find that they had used that goop. should have been dry and double clamped. Also the fittings are not metal. One of them developed a crack and started leaking so I replaced the barbed nipples with brass.

Well, given that's what an RV bypass kit is, I don't see how one could use it if you're removing the hot water heater. It appears to be 2 valves which screw into a hot water heater, and these valves are connected by a hose, so one can drain the tank.

If you're removing the heater, all you need is a hose barb to connect the 2 water lines you removed.

Thanks for the suggestions and info.. It does look like barb fittings are
the order of the day; everything is working, no leaks for now.

Boris,
The idea is to allow me drain the whole water system, then bypass the
water heater. After all this you only should need abt 1-2gals of antifreeze,
rather than the 7-8 gals I have been using in the system.

If I were to remove the tank to add storage space I would cap off the hot
water lines after the pump "T".

Too bad there wasn't an attachment to the Wallas to take advantage of its
heat source, other than a pot.
Now, if I could snake a small piece of tubing thru the "second" cooking
area of the cooking top.... route that to the engine ports of the heater as
a closed system.
Next question is: how to keep the added heat from radiating into the
cabin space from the stove, especially in the summer.
Oh well, so much for throwing an idea at the mind's wall.....

Boris;
I think my '05/CD25 has a drain that is a thru hull that is beside the
pumpout's hull port. I'll be dumping my system in a couple of weeks and
I'll check it again, but I have never had any water under the " step well"
where the shower pump is, other than from the shower drain.

I'm glad mentioned it. We don't like too many surprises when in the water.

I wasn't posting it for use if one REMOVES the heater. I was merely posting it for use if one wants to drain the heater and fill the system w/ antifreeze. Perhaps I misconstrued the inquiry/confusion. Based on the posts prior to yours, I thought you didn't know what it was. :?
