OK, so I bought a used C-Dory and want to change the name and remove the old registration numbers. Any particularly good tricks for doing this?
A hair dryer on "hot" has been suggested. Does it work? Is there a better method.
Thanks,
Tom

The hair dryer on hot or a good heat gun (be careful with the latter) works well. Heat them up and use a straight edge razor at a shallow angle. They should come off pretty easy. Then you can clean up the remaining goo with a little isopropanol.

I would not use a razor blade unless you are working on real glass (not poly ester) a nice plastic scraper works as well on fiberglass gel coat, and there is no risk of damage to the gel coat. I have always used the heat gun on low (high can damage a gel coat--maybe better a hair dryer, with lower heat.)

There are also adhesive and trim removers such as from 3M which work well.

There will be a shadow, where the gel coat has not aged--usually this can be buffed out with Finesse it II, or with time it will fade to the same as surrounding areas.

Hi Tom,

Congrats on the new to you boat. Welcome to the C-Brats. It a really great group and there is almost everything you could possible want to know about your boat available here.

Bob is right about the heat. A hair dryer works just fine. I have a whole series in my photo album, from taking the old name off to getting the new one on. It is here are this link.

Use your debit card instead of a razor.....

Preferably the credit card with an RDIF chip!

And the excess glue will come off with gasoline. No, wait that's too expensive, use 12 year old Scotch.......

Thank you for your wise advice. The "Olive" will soon become the "Anna Marie III" (I know how to please/mollify a wife.)

For painted on names, EZ Off oven cleaner works well. I used it on a Carver I had purchased. The gel coat yellowed a bit, which worried me, but the next day was back to normal. Be very careful not to get the oven cleaner on paint you want to stay on!

Hi Tom. Congrats on your new boat. I hope to join dory owner ranks myself and hopefully soon. We are practically neighbors. Hope to see you on the water. Don't forget to consult Vigors for renaming protocols.
