I am still waiting to get my 22 angler that I've deposited on from Wefings.
I am super excited about it, and I think i got a good / fair deal on it.
However, I'm not an experienced boat buyer by any means.
It was such a long distance away, I did not have a chance to sea trial, and I didn't have it surveyed.
I guess I will should have it surveyed at this point.
Any recommendations for an independent surveyor that knows these boats?
All the talk on here about balsa core problems has gotten me a little nervous.

Let's be truthful: balsa core is good. In some respects it beats plastic, but both are there to hold the fiberglass sheets apart to give a stronger structure.

What is BAD is wet core, plastic or balsa. So if you have the boat surveyed, ask the guy if he sees any wet/soft spots.

Just to keep everything calm, I would believe that a boat sold through Werfings would check out OK.

It’s never a bad idea to have a survey done. I had a conversation a couple of years ago with a fellow out west that was going be buy a 25 sight unseen. I had already looked at the boat here in Florida and advised him to NOT buy the boat without some kind of inspection. He thanked me for the information and passed up on the boat.

With that said. I’ve bought two C-Dorys with out surveys. One sight unseen till I drove 1100 plus miles to pick it up. Both have turned out to be good boats but one never knows. I’ve heard of major problems on boats after they have been inspected. As far as balsa core problems in the hull, they are rare.

Buying a C-Dory from Marc at Wefings would give me a lot of confidence. He’s definitely one of the best guys in the boat business! No ...I don’t get paid for saying that. It’s just fact.

You can always get a survey done. NOTE the 2 recommendations already listed. AND NOTE who posted them.

If Marc is selling that boat, I would NOT hesitate a minute to go ahead with the deal. He is the most reputable C-Dory (used) dealer out there and a straight up guy, knows the boats, and will do you right.

Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance.... thats huge!

I left a message with the surveyors Marc reccommended.
Though, I think the angler was a good buy even if it did have some sort of unknown issue. Some of the old restoration posts I've seen on here make it look like these boats always have potential to be restored.
 
If its the one with the 115 Suzuki I looked at it(on line) just a few days ago and thought it looked very clean and well priced.

Never met Mark but from ALL reports on this site he is a stand up guy.

The survey at minimum will give you a list of things to knock out.

For example on mine the inspector pointed out the 15 year old clamps to pumps should be a) replaced, b) doubled up and c) stainless. Had I done it would have looked at them and said "looks good enough".

Ask how many CDories here's done. If you can be there for the survey do it. Tell the guy up front that you want to learn as much about the boat and process as possible. Your paying $500-600 for peace of mind, but that's a chunk of change - get as much out of it as possible.

My "guys" didn't do the engine - just the boat structure. They did a quick periphery check on the engine, but didn't get into compression checks, diagnostic codes...

My surveyor after I had him do 2 was like "John - you know enough about these boats to do your own. You can call me if you want, but with the checklists you have you can do it yourself. " Great guy. When a deal didn't work out, I sold one survey back to the original owner for 50% of my cost. Everyone was happy.

Lastly, I always had time for the survey/sea trial. I looked at 5 boats before finding the right one. Took 18 months. Learned a ton along the way. I applaud people guts for buying sight unseen or without a survey - just not my style. There's always another deal out there...turn out the last one for me was the best fiscally and condition wise. Course it's easy to buy a boat when you already have a boat.
