Raymarine S1000 Autopilot pump location

I ordered a S1000 Autopilot for our 2008 CD22. I'm concerned with the noise of the pump and would like to install the pump in the cockpit area.

Has anyone installed the pump in the cockpit area? If so, how did you run the hydraulic lines? Did you run lines back to the steering? Or did you run the lines to the ram?

I'm thinking that I can just order longer hydraulic lines and replace the provided lines with these. If I put in longer lines (ie - 6 ft), is there any concerns with the pump capacity/etc?

There's been lots said on the site about this topic. A search will let you see what it is. I've got a system too and have yet to install it. I would think, as long as you're moving at any speed at all, the pump noise would not be objectionable even if mounted behind the helm so long as you use the rubber feet and maybe even mount it with a rubber pad between it's mounting block and the bulkhead. I'll probably mount mine under the big forward bunk on the TC.

I think the fluid is just about incompressible in this application and, as long as there's no air in the system, would not make much difference how long the lines are or where the pump is. I think the simplest location, is behind the helm though.

I know I've seen photos and discussions about mounting the pump under the galley and back in the cockpit. See the search engine for leads on threads.

Take a good look at the pump before you mount it back in the cockpit.

Will water splashed on it be a problem? Especially salt water?

You'll have to run the compass cable back to the pump from your GPS, of course, along with the on-off and any other circuits required.

Mounting it within the port lazarette locker may be a possibility (if you're not using it for something else incompatible with the pump), especially if you get a well sealed set up, such as possible with SEA3PO's replacement hatch covers.

I'd call up Raymarine's technical representative and discuss it with him/her. There may be some hidden problems that don't occur to our common sense thinking, like problems about how to bleed the line, helm, and pump units of air, etc.

As far as installing "the" hydraulic pump, I think there are at least 3 criteria.

1. Keep it dry and out of harms way. I don't know where you're thinking of in the cockpit, but make sure that it's in a DRY sealed area. Water and dirt are Heck on both hydraulics and electrical connections.

2. Install it where the hydraulic lines are level or going up from the pump, so it's easy to bleed. This is a biggie, and I blew it. Length of lines is not as important as getting the air out of them. Hydraulic fluid is incompressible.

3. Keep the power lines short. Those suckers draw a lot of amps where they are pumping, and you don't want a large voltage drop.

I installed the pump under the sink in Journey On where it's nice and dry, and near the power panel.

And ran the lines forward to the steering pump, where it's easy to join, although hard to bleed, I finally had it power bleed.

When it's running the noise tells me how hard it's working, and when I need to hand steer. Otherwise the noise is just comforting, as you know you're not steering.

Putting it next to the pump is better as far as the pump installation goes, but takes precious space from the V-berth. I saw an installation in the aft cockpit of a Parker, and it worked well, but the installation compartment was sealed.

On my Tomcat, I removed the coaming box on the starboard side, then epoxied wooden struts along the sides as a mounting point for a board that I screwed into as a shelf to mount the pump. It is located low enough so that the pump would clear the the coaming box when it was re-installed.

Also, I wanted power steering on my Tomcat so I replaced the coaming box with a shorter one and installed an inspection door forward of the coaming box. Because my power steering pump was tall, I could not mount it low like the autopilot pump. Therefore, I had to install the inspection door. The mounting shelf for the power steering pump was installed like the autopilot pump.

I will have to search the site to figure out how to insert the images. Pictures to follow.
 
JOURNEY ON makes an excellent case for your setup.

Likewise I had Sea Angel's pump mounted under the sink area. The noise
is minimum; but as noted, 'comforting'. There are several pixs of
Sea Angel's setup in the album, as others.

I also read one of the former threads were in someone said "the s1000 pump noise is like a mini jack hammer" and that really scared me too, almost enough to think about putting mine out back in the cockpit. But now that I've got mine running I don't think its all that noisy and I'm sure glad I did not do that.

Mine is mounted directly under the hydraulic steering helm on the back wall of the v-berth cabin. I mounted mine horizontally, but vertically might be a tad easier because its easier to see the little screw you have to turn back and forth for bleeding.

I have the pictures of where I located my autopilot pump on my photo album. Sorry, but I do not know how to add with my reply. Good luck with your project.

By the way, I do not hear either power steering or autopilot pump in the cockpit locations. I elected not to install in my cabin for lack of space and did not want to chance any noise nuisances from either pump while I nap during those long stretches of trolling with no fish!

The power steering has been one of those additions that one doesn't appreciate until you have it, kind of like having an autopilot.
 
Awesome -- thanks very much for all the pictures and advice. I'm waiting until I actually have the auto-pilot in hand, but I'm planning on installing the pump in the cockpit area.

Once I have the unit, then I'll be able to see what I have. I'll post once I have it figured out.

Not sure what you are referring to when you talk about a coaming box. Is this the starboard fishbox?

I mounted mine on the back of the console horizonal and don't find the noise bad at all. After a while you don't even notice it. As far as bleeding I bleed mine before mounting the pump and didn't have any trouble at all. I mounted the control to the side of the hull to a hardwood board epoxied to the hull behind the console.
