Raising the roof on a 16 Cruiser!

The convertible popup concept is intriguing. It would keep the classic look but be a functional lift when needed. Might even work with 4 hydraulic/gas lifts to make it go up automatically. then a canvas closure maybe isinglass or screen. Leakage would be a concern. Really like all the input. Got my brain swimming with ideas!

Keeping the classic (conventional) look might be very important in terms of resale value. (!)

I think a good canvas person could seal it up fine for you.

Hydraulics? Pneumatics? Why not electrics? Use Lenco trim-tab units. They're just electric screw-jacks similar to those they use on aircraft to deploy the spoilers for landing and take off. (Those the Lencos might not have the 6" range you need.)

The convertible conversation would be more gutsy than the fixed lift. But, it really has me thinking!
 
As soon as I get Sweet Pea back from repowering, some serious cyphering :) will be taking place. Could always start with the popup and change it to fixed if I hate it!
 
im diggin the convertible idea, damn it, i am afraid I may have just opened up a new can of head worms...
 
OK Sweet Pea you want to keep the boat go look at the Macgregor 25 sailboats (80's vintage)they had a roof that raises with 4 pneumatic cylinders My friend had one pretty neat idea Down for cruising and up for sleeping with a sunbrella collar. Go to Papillion pictures he might have one of the top up ?
 
I use to own a older Macgregor 25 about 15 years ago, The design of my top was 4 aluminum strips of metal that acted as a hinge. The top lifted (manually) up and forward as it went up. Then an Isinglass surround covered the opening. That concept would work possible, except I would prefet it to go straight up and not up and forward.

This is what I have running through my mind at the moment. This is a very crude sketch done in PC Paint I do not have and drawing programs. It is kind of like a lifting Tortoise Shell!

This way the cabin should be protected with fiberglass at all times, and closure of the gap can be with either canvas for blowing rain protection, or screen for ventilation.

Still have to work out the lifting details. Still thinking some sort of pneumatic strut. A grab handle (Oh! S#!T handle as my wife calls it) should work for closure.

Frustrating when you know how to do something, but you just can't remember! (even using the available help) Need more Caffeine!
