Quick Prop Question - Suzuki DF175 on Venture 26

Hi,

I'm looking to get a spare prop for my Suzuki DF175 on my Venture 26. Right now it is spinning a stainless steel 15.25 X 19R, which works perfectly where I have been running it (about 900ft above sea level). I get right up around 6000rpm full throttle.

I've heard some folks having trouble if they go to higher elevation like Lake Powell, although not with this specific boat/motor combination. I may be looking at taking this boat to Lake Powell next year. I was thinking of getting an aluminum spare prop that is pitched down a bit from the one I am running right now, specifically for these conditions. But, I don't know if that is necessary, and maybe I should just get one with the same diameter and pitch that I have now.

I can offer what I've done with a Honda 90. For most boating, I use a stainless 15 pitch prop. At Lake Powell, I use a 13 pitch, which lets me get back close to proper RPMs.
 
As Steve notes most of us with the Honda 90's on the 22's drop to 13" pitch. I also tried this with my C Dory 25, and eventually went to a 11".

The Suzuki 150 and 175 are the same block etc--and you can drop 2" to a 17" pitch and be fine. The aluminum prop will have a little more flex, than the SS--and the SS is preferable for most running. However, all boats need a spare prop--and the Al, in 17 pitch would work well.
