Pt Defiance Crabbing

Is pretty good. Pulled Dungies on every pull, but almost all were females. Did get two limits of red rocks though. And they were big red rocks... big enough to meet dungey requirements.

I'm not sure I like crabbing out of my boat though. I like the boat too much and it was a mess. we got into some sea weed and I think I spent more time washing the boat than fishing in it yesterday lol.

Definitely want to get a roof rack to store pots.

Spent 5 hours on opening day up north near Langley and Hat Island. Lousiest opening day I've ever had. We ended up w/ 7. I threw tons of females and males about 6" back; even a big soft shell went back. Fresh bait, good pots...I think the area was picked clean last month.

we started with chicken my buddy brought and it was meager. then I threw in a dogfish we caught while trolling and it KILLED 'em.

I stayed at Pt Defiance area because it had a solid report from walakes. I have crabbed up around shilshole before only to pull maybe 1 or 2 dungies and very small red rocks, not worth it.

also, coincidence.. we the first pull was after 3-4 hours during an outgoing tide. the second pull with the dogfish was during about 3hrs of an incoming tide.

I have never seen red rock crabs the size of legal dungeness. How do they taste when that big?

oh my, we went out today and got 6 more in just a couple hours. one of our red rocks measured over 7"!! so far my redrocks are coming in mostly bigger than my dungies, weird.

and they taste fantastic. took them to the neighbors on the 4th and boiled them in some butter water (they had previously cooked corn in) and everyone loved them.

we took the boy out for a few more hours yesterday, just a short soak of the pots yielded these fine specimens, killed the soaking time by bottom fishing in the same area.

good looking eats in this one. we did real well over the opening weekend.I pulled pots one day in c-dory as we were heading past them from king fishing yesterday. other than that I agree its too hard on boats we went out and got a 14' livy to pull pots in. we share it between me and my cousin. this weekend we took 104 big dungies. going after work tonight with my brother and his family to clear gear and will have cards for 30 more. will report back when we are done. had 2 big crab boil parties over the weekend. and the rest have gone to friends neighbors and relatives.

so 104 crab divided by 5 per tag = 20.8 tags or if you had two days would be 10.4 tags . Thats a lot of people for a 14 livingston, because you can only pull the pots yourself and fill your tags. You can't sent two guys out to pull for everyone else. That would be party fishing is illegal right??

we fish A LOT and we never fish ILLEGAL. I would take my family of four when we went, we go in am, cousin and his buddies go in the afternoon. thats why i said boat total. heres the break down
thursday we set and give them an hour me my son and cousin. take 9(mine and my sons card).
cousin and wife go out in afternoon and take 10
friday our family go out in am take 20, buddies pass on afternoon as we were having a party.
sat our family go out in am pull 20. buddies (5 of them) take 25.
sunday we go king fishing but on way in we swing by pots and take 20 for the 4 of us on board the dory.
total:104
In the future I will not break down fishing reports by the way, I am this time as It was questioned and I have not posted too many fishing reports here yet.

last night we go out with brother his wife, son, my daughter, and I to clear gear and we took 25, for them to take home as my brother had to work all weekend and missed out. tossed back about 10 more keepers and pulled gear. it was a slow ride back due to added weight of gear. also we live 1 mile from the launch we use so its not a big trip to go check pots.

total take for the first week=129

a couple iphone pics last night

oh on a side note my wife got stung by a random jelly tentacle that came up with one of the pots and fell on her leg for a while last Saturday!

no there are a couple in the fridge that will get eaten tonight. none went in the freezer all were eaten fresh. the 25 last night my brother took all of them. between grandparents, neighbors, a few older friends that can no longer go ect. they got spread out pretty quick. and we had two crab boil parties over the holiday weekend with corn potatos and spot shrimp ect. that was our first time doing this and we will be doing more of them, they were a hit.
need to take more pics been slacking lately wife and sister in law at one of the boils

we will put a few away for freezer but only 4-5 of them.

yeah its a fun play ground :) king fishing has been spotty for us so far here in MA6. landed 3 so far only kept one. hopefully this weekend will be better. I have only lived here on the peninsula, except for a short stint in Seattle for school and some work experience. but I agree its a great place to be.

i'm about 30 minutes away from Pt Defiance so Tacoma is the easy place to dunk the boat. the salmon fishing there is never great anymore, but we had 6 take downs last weekend. 3 were dogs and 3 were unknown (didn't make it to the boat). I think one was actually a salmon because it was the only one that took line and really fought. unfortunately he snapped my line. It was my own fault, I should have tied a new leader after catching the dog. their teeth do a number to the line.

This weekend I think I'm going to mosey north a bit and see if I can get into a more productive fishery. thinking somewhere around the west side of Whidbey.

Very nice haul. What were you using for bait. PM me if that is a better way to answer. :)
