Possession Salmon

Thanks to Peter's intel, we boated 3 silvers on Monday. Fished green buoy west of Possession Bar on the ebb and right at slack we doubled into 2 nice silvers. Frustratingly, my parter did not manage his fish and lost it. Mine was just shy of 10lbs and his was just as nice if not nicer. We fished at 60 feet, green flashers, white/glow squid with a herring strip. After an encounter with a Grade-A (insert explicative of choice here), I needed to cool off so we ran to Useless and fished the rips boating 2 more slivers of average size. Both of those came on the same gear and depth.

Pulled the pots and had 3 nice dungy's to wrap up the summer crabbing season.

All in all a good day on the water and some nice meat in the freezer. Hopefully the Coho fun just builds from here!

Anybody fishing the Everett derby? I'm in RI for work that weekend...

Sept. 4 2013
we started fishing about 9:15 this morning just south of the Mukilteo Ferry trolling South. two on the downriggers. we put 2 pinks in the boat in about 20 minutes. then a dry spell .we trolled all the way to browns bay. we turned around and fished North and just about even with Shipwreck we hit another nice pink. then I decided to throw out a small Big Als 4 inch fish flash behind a 6 oz banana weight with a small pink hootchie. we let out about 50 pulls and trolled about 20 minutes . the port side hit and when I got up to reel the center line in it hit and we had a double. then all a sudden the starboard hit and now we have a triple. we landed all three luckily.
then it was a slow rest of the day but we managed to put 12 nice Pinks in the boat. I have 7 of them brining as I write this. Smoked pink tomorrow evening. UUUUMMMMMM.

where do you guys recommend launching the C-Dory in the shipwreck area? I've heard of a sling launch, but the sling isn't that important to me.

i've had my boat in a slip in Everett since July. before that i just launched at Everett and made the run down. their ramp is really nice and i think there are 15-16 lanes. $9 to launch and park and there are 2 freshwater stations. its about 6mi to the corner at Mukilteo and 10mi to Shipwreck. there is also a ramp in Mukilteo but i have never used it.

this is a good resource: http://www.rco.wa.gov/maps/boatmaps/viewer.htm

make your selection on the left, refresh then use the 'identify' tool on the bottom. i use it in street vs. map form so it loads quicker.

The Mukilteo launch is closest by I heard it's not the best place to launch. I think due to the strong currents. I kept our boat in Everett for 6 weeks and it's a half hour boat ride to Shipwreck. Edmonds has the sling launch and Shilshole is probably about 45 min to 1 hour from Shipwreck.

Last year we kept the boat at Shilshole for the coho season and I started fishing exclusively in Edmonds just south of the ferry terminal. We had a great season.

Good luck!

that's a good idea too. Shilshole is a reasonable cruise by boat and I know that launch fairly well. Its been a couple years but as i recall it was pretty nice. I'm going to try to get out sunday morning if I can for a few hrs.

Sun 9-15
Great day on the water. Connected with my dad again. Twice in one month? Never!

Wanting to hit on the first tide change of the day we left the slip in Everett at 0445 motoring out in dense fog and pitch black...a little erie. Eyes glued to the Ritchie and Raymarine, we kept her at displacement speeds knowing it would take about an hour to get to Possession Point and by then enough light would be on the water to cruise to the Scatchet Head buoy. Went as planned and we dropped gear at just about 0600. By 0800 we had 3 silvers and 1 pink in the box...two of them at just shy of 9 and 11lbs. (pink was a bit beat for an ocean fish and in hindsight should have put her back but she'll smoke just fine). Since the goal was to spend time with my dad we set the big ones as the bench mark and kept fishing, releasing 3 more silvers and 2 blackmouth. Since the other silvers were a measly 3-5lbs we fished on and headed back to the marina about 2 in the afternoon.

All but one blackmouth came at 60ft. The hot rod was a green/glow Hotspot with a reg glow hootchie with Ace Hi Fly UV insert 36in back.

where's the best place for overnight moorage friday if I want to fish shipwreck area on saturday? Looks like its almost smack in the middle of Shilshole and Everett Marinas...

thanks Chromer, that's about 17 miles to "the spot" by boat from shilshole then? just trying to get a gauge for how long it will take me in the dark to get up there. I tend to motor considerably slower during hours of darkness ;)

although I dont know if there is anything I enjoy more in the world than being on my boat (motor or duck boat) with a cup of coffee while the sun peaks over the ridge-lines...

I'd stay at the Everett Marina. It's inexpensive, one of the nicest marinas around with great clean amenities, and it's within walking distance of Scuttlebutt brewery.

From there you can fish the Racetrack around Hat Island, the Bait Box on the southeastern side of Widbey, Possesion Point, Shipwreck, Apple Cove, Useless Bay, etc, etc, etc.

And then on your way home you can stop at Fish Brewing Company for a nice meal before leaving Everett.

I've fished Shilshole with moderate success (which is substantially more than what I see at pt defiance) so with Johns Saltwater Journal in hand, I was going to head for the Possession to Shipwreck areas. :thup thanks for the suggestions! although it looks like John's journal specifically recommends the south side of Hat island for late sept coho... so everett might be the ticket then.

we are headed out for a day of fishing tomorrow (WED 25th.) I have an open seat for someone if they are so inclined. we will launch from the Everett boat launch at approximately 8:00 am.
call me at 360 661 3703 for details.

REPORT: It was "LIGHTS OUT FISHING" today near Edmonds for us anyway. My net broke, and i bare handed each fish (2 were over 10lbs). Didn't lose a one. We headed back to the barn after just 1 hour out there. If you can at all get out - do so.

I have high expectations for tomorrow as StarcraftTom will be in attendance.

This is my father and a silver.

thats fantastic Chromer. what was your lure/presentation of choice? I'm taking a buddy to that area saturday. if anyone else is out feel free to wave 8)

Glow Hootchie and purple haze board. 65 feet.

If you bare hand fish, they take better pictures as they wont lose scales like they do in a net.
