Possession Salmon

Thanks Forrest. Good explanation.

I've crossed the bar in two C-Brats CD22's over the past year in great conditions and sloppy conditions (thanks Rick & Patrick). It gave me confidence that the boat and I can handle it as long as it's not at the worst possible conditions, from what I hear would be Maximum Ebb. I would obviously pay close attention to the bar conditions. But I would be interested in trying the "hole in the wall" as well. Gives me alternatives.

I never thought of using the hole in the wall last week. 40 years of experience speaks volumes and I will try next time. I have gone through there when fishing south in June and it is a piece of cake, but since I was going straight out, didn't think to try it when rough.

You can plainly see the opening between the end of the south jetty and the sunken jetty on the GPS chartplotter. You also see the depth on the sonar if on split screen, like I run.

Salmon, Pinks I mean. Yesterday from Mukilteo to Shipwreck in Puget Sound. We managed 5. First 2 came off the group of houses south of Lighthouse in 380' feet of water. Remaining came mid channel just north of the shipwreck. Was a pretty good school of fish and several caught by the bunch of boats. 60-80' on the downrigger. Fish full of krill and all nice big males. They should be on their way. Thought I saw Roger out there. Was that you Roger?

Yes, we were out there Friday the 16th we fished from about 9:30 till 1:30 and put 3 nice pinks and 1 silver in the boat. One of the pinks weighed a little over 8 pounds. was that you in the C-Dory. it looked like another pre 87 classic just like Sensei.
we have come to the conclusion that trolling North is not as good as South. we will only troll South on Monday and see how that goes.
How deep were you fishing? we caught all of our fish at about 115 on the rigger.

After following this thread for a few weeks, we went out and got a pair of used Scotty 1106's. Actually went in on the set with my brother in law and we plan to have them fully in use by the end of this season.

He is on the river where 2 of the folks in our camping group landed 2 kings. Once we get back, the process of learning the technique of downrigger fishing begins.

Nice work Roger! What was your weapon of choice? What was the area you trolled?

We put in a few hours this morning and got 2 pinks in the box. One really bright with great color to the meat. He's sitting on the BBQ as I type. Lost one silver close to the boat. Acrobatic little bugger. All fish came at 100' on an 8" silver dodger with a pink mini hootchie 16" back and just north of shipwreck by 1.5-2 miles 1/4 way out from shore. We got ours trolling northbound against the tail end of the ebb. Tom was out there also trolling just north of shipwreck at 100' as well. He did better than us.

Things are starting to pick up. Will be out again for an afternoon session or two this coming week. If anybody is free there should be an open seat so shoot me a PM. 4:30 to sunset out of Everett.

Roger, I was fishing Thursday. 60-80' on the downrigger. I won't be back out there until the last week of August. Other fun plans keeping me away. They will still be there then as the run is building. I like the morning and I always troll south or east and west. That northbound troll is never as productive.

A tip I have used. When catching fish stay on the spot. If you are out of them, pick up the gear and run back up stream, north, and troll through the track you caught them. Way more productive than trying to troll back up. Seems like the current always runs south even when tide comes in.

Keep those reports coming!

labor day weekend the wife and I will be headed into the islands for 4-5 days to explore and fish. I have been getting my clock cleaned in the south sound, I can't catch salmon down here to save my life. last weekend I had a new record, NINE sharks boated. this weekend we spent 3 days/2nights down in swantown and boated two more sharks just south of Harstene. Zero salmon. :thdown

we launched the boat at Everett Boat Launch and ran down to Mukilteo. we dropped gear by 09:30 and started fishing. we ran out in the middle of the channel trolling South . about 20 minutes of 65 ft. we dropped down to 100 on one and 120 on the other. about 10 minutes later we hit the first of 12 fish. 10 pinks and two nice silvers. all were at a depth of 120 on the rigger. we used white flasher and pink hootchie we had a double at the last two needed and we were done fishing. we landed the last fish at 14:30
the two silvers were 8 lbs. and 9 lbs.

Nice work roger. I have fished the last two weekends. the 10 and 11 were just slow. we only landed 1 and lost another. The 17th we landed 4 and lost 3 the 18th we landed 1 and lost 8. thats right we lost 8 on the way to the boat. but they are stating to show up and sunday it was 4 to a boat on average and not 3/4 per boat like the 10-11th. I have to go to vegas for two days but will be back out sat afternoon and sunday. good luck.

Tuesday Report: The fish checker at the Everett Boat Launch checked 37 boats today with 239 salmon.

from Johns sporting goods web site. GAME ON. and I am leaving town for three days :cry

Game on indeed Tom! I went out this morning with my childhood buddy and we had an EPIC day, going 8 for 11 with some nice size Pinks. After getting out there around 7:40am, the first fish hit around 8:15 or so. Then it was non-stop action until about 10:00. We landed our last fish around 10:45 or so. We trolled just south of Shipwreck in 386-415 feet of water using the standard white dodger/pink hoochie combo and absolutely slayed 'me. I even used a Kokanee rod and reel combination which was a hoot. Thanks to intel on this thread from Roger and Patrick, we trolled south exclusively and once we hit our first fish, we hit fish on the rest of our passes until we limited. We even had 2 doubles! What a great afternoon!

Going out again this weekend. GAME ON!!

on Monday when we came in to the Everett Boat Launch the fish biologist blackboard tally at 3:30 was about 435 pinks and 14 silvers. there were still a lot of boats out there so it will be interesting to see what the total will be for that day.

Made a quick evening run tonight 08/20. Dropped gear just around the corner past Mukilteo at 6:00PM. Trolled southbound with one rod at 100' and the other at 120' center channel. Not a strike. When we made it down to Shipwreck turned east and landed one pink from 100'. Current pushed us out so ran back up and started east again. Pink #2 from 100'. Ran back once more. Saw marks shallow and few jumpers so put one rod at 35' and landed a beautiful hook-nosed silver pushing 10lbs. Made the run back but no other action. Pulled the gear just after sundown at 8:30PM and headed to port. Not bad for a couple hours of fun but would have like to of done better given the recent reports.

The pinks came on an 11" white flasher, pink full sized hootchie. The silver came on an 8" silver dodger and mini pink hootchie.

For those of you that stick to the southbound troll, how is the angle on the rigger wire? We seemed to be really bucking the incoming tide and even at a slow 1-1.5 MPH on the GPS, at 100'-120' the downrigger balls were blowing way back, WELL past 45 degrees. Is that something you experience?

I was out there on 8/18/13 and we boated 3 pinks and lost 5, the fish checker said that there were 500 counted on Sunday alone. We fished at 100-110 feet with large pink squid and a red and white hot shot flasher.

Pinks? Did you get any coconuts?
Nope, just Pinks. A couple of nice 7-8 pounders. Four in the 4-5 lb range and two 3 lbers. It was a hoot!

Didn't target coho, I think they would have been higher in the water column. I think I saw some kings near the bottom. Love my new HDS-7 fish finder!
