Possession Coho 2014

We had two rods in at Richmond beach at 6:45 this morning and limitted at 9:45. We lost two also. It was windy and hard to keep the boat tracking how we wanted while fighting fish so we ended up with slack lines twice. All fish were on hoochies. We have been putting 2" of yarn through the bait loop on the front hook and soaking it with scent. I think it might hold a lot more on there that way. 70-90 feet deep. Going to try and do the same tomorrow. For what it's worth 4 charter boats all showed up there at the same time right at high slack and netted a few before they went north to the oil docks.

We should have a c-brat coho derby, the weekend after Everett coho derby each year. Likely entrants, Catch-22, Susan E, C-Dancer, Checkpoint II etc...

See you in the morning

StarCraft Tom: Cant put my hands on hand held VHF. Can you bring one?
C-Brat Rodeo sounds great!
Anyone know who the C-Dory with a gold color top is?

Thanks for letting a few coho get through to the South Sound!

We are starting to see more fish down here, but they have been slow to show up. Must be the Gauntlet of C-Dorys in Possession.

Had a great day at Richmond beach. Saw C-dancer and Checkpoint 2 as well a a few other C dorys out there. We had 8 hook ups and landed 6. Same routine as we have been doing. Pete was just getting into them as we were heading out too. 4 fish came in the first hour so it is important to be fishing as early as possible.

I had a fun day today with my beautiful daughter and her great fiance. Once again I missed the early morning bite. :x Managed to scratch one out for my future son in law within the first hour. Then I crackered one, 1 for 2. Then nothing for a couple of hours. I was just about to pack it in when we fell into a late bite between the oil docks and the marina. I got mine in but the s-i-l lost his when we forgot to bring the dr ball up and the line wrapped around it. Oh well, that's fishing. Still we finished 2 for 4 on a gorgeous day on the water.

Like Kevin says, I need to start fishing early tomorrow. See you out there.

Peter

Great job everybody. C Dory derby, fun!
Went to Deer Harbor for the weekend, great time relaxing and visited Eastsound Saturday for the Farmers Market, wow! Lots of great produce and good eats there. Great water both ways although hit thick fog in Rosario on the way back today, gave the radar a work out.
Looking forward to next weekend, should be more fish each day.

2014 is the year of lost fish for me! I've lost more fish this past 2 weeks than all of last season! No changes to techniques or gear. I've even dumped 5/0 hooks on my hootchie's and still lost them. My lost to caught count is over 2-1.

Paul and I had a fun day out on the water Saturday. We had 4 hookups in the first hour and a half of the morning but only managed one in the boat. After we lost the 3 fish on the same side, I inspected my gear more carefully. Turns out one of the hooks had an odd issue with the knot allowing it to slip when pressure was applied, turning it out of the fish's mouth. Oh well. Changed it out, boated 2 more fish but lost 2 more. Go figure, but 3-7 not bad. Fished Green Glow Hot Spot and Green Glow Spatterback on one side, Purple Haze Hot Spot Green Glow Grand Slam Bucktail on the other. One trend I've noticed is the Purple Haze Grand Slam Combo gets consistent hits once the sun hits the water. If foggy or really overcast, nada. But when sunny it outperforms. Fish caught between Shipwreck and Browns Bay at 75' and 90'.

Sunday got out for just a bit with an old roomie of mine. First off the, the water was a cluster Sunday. Way too many boats. I realized it was the Seahawks Bye Week. Usually Sunday is slower due to football. Ran the same gig but was a slower day for me. Still lost more fish than caught. Went 2-5. One of the fish lost would have been my biggest of the season. Fish was well over 10lbs. When it tuckered out at the boat, just before we could get it in the net, we hit a massive seaweed/eelgrass raft. Wrapped up the line and the drag pulled out the hooks, doh!

One of those weekends for me. Peter, Kevin, and Tom were doing better than I.

Looks like some semi-stable weather leading into the weekend so here's to more Coho.

We had the best weekend so far of the 2014 Coho season. Stayed on the boat Saturday night and got out early Sunday am and went 4 for 4 at Richmond Beach. Of course we were there to witness Kevin on Catch 22 doing his thing, nearly limiting again. I know Troy (Sea Star) was out there too near Shipwreck, sounded a little slow. And Tom (Susan E) got a late start, don't know how he did. Dwight (Checkpoint II) was out Saturday but not Sunday and Patrick (Kim Christine) took a break.

So for the weekend, we went 6 for 8. Not too shabby!! I did what I said I would do, get out early (check), stay with a lure I had confidence in (check), locate the bait (check), mark the waypoint and keep going back over where we hooked up (check) and of course the fish coming down from the straits sure helped. So I think I came in 2nd place in the C-Brats Coho Derby for the weekend. Looks like Kevin won!

Troy - just out of interest, what hooks are you using for your hootchie rigs and how do you tie them. I usually use either Owner or Gamakatsu hooks (Owner are more expensive but are stronger, Gamakatsu is fine for coho). I use a 4/0 on the front and a 3/0 on the rear. I tie them about as close together as I reasonably can and I tie them with the hooks facing in opposite directions. I almost never lose a fish on that rig unless the leader breaks.

Sounds like everyone is doing well. I took my buddies sled to the deception pass bridge for two days this week. Its a great place to fish for coho. 2 to 3 hours before the out going tide stops and changes to incoming is the window. No downriggers are needed but you could use them. Just a 3 to 5 ounce banana weight , sometimes called a mooching weight, tied to 3 feet of line tied to a dodger ( not a flasher, for those that do not know a dodger swings back and forth in the water a flasher rotates in a circle ) six feet of line and then the lure of your choice. 99% are using plug cut herring . I use sardine in a bait head. I will also be trying a brads cut plug herring lure next time.

Heres a video of the action, Not taken by me but I saw this guy out there filming. He has a lot of clips on you tube.

Its close up fishing but every one seems friendly and works together. You just hold the wall, or as close as the other boats allow you to get to the walk, for the most part and then as the tide starts to go slack every one spreads out and circles west then north to the middle then to the bridge then to the wall and repeat.

thursday we landed one, our first day, saturday we landed 3 and lost 2 and had a seal take another at the boat as i was netting the fish. An one interested in a seal coat??

sunday I was down at possession with byrdman on the susan e but we only had two take downs that hooked up and we lost both. One right at the boat. Pat almost got a flashed in the forehead when the hook came out.

If anyone wants to fish the bridge in there boat call me. I will bring the gear. the 27 is in the water in everett while trailer is being worked on ( will it would be worked on if I ever worked on it.

Hey Roger, I use Gamakatsu hooks primarily but have a few set up with stainless steel Mustad hooks; they seem to stay sharper longer. I tie them in a standard mooching leader setup with the hooks close together. I haven't changed how I've rigged things over last season and lost hardly any fish at all then. If the down rigger clip released, the fish was usually in the net. Rarely even a short strike.

Double 3/0 hooks has been what I used primarily but new leaders are going 4/0 or even 5/0.

So you run the hooks in opposite directions, huh? How does that setup benefit over a standard rig?

Mostly that regardless of which angle the fish comes to the hootchie at there is a point aimed at them. Also with this setup, I often wind up with both hooks in the mouth. I think that's mostly due to having them very close together.

Sunday was frustrating but in the end good. We went 5 for 10 (yes we failed to net 5 fish). Luckily there was plenty of action so we still nearly limited. We continued to do the same thing we have been doing. 70-90 feet deep, troll fast, make turns, and use a lot of scent on your hoochie. One fish shy of limiting the boat 4 trips in a row, easily the best stretch I've ever had.

Very interesting Roger and worth trying. Do you tie them bend-to-bend or eye-to-eye? What type of knots? Too much trouble to snap a pic?
