Port Side live well drain

What is the preferred way to drain this well. Add a thru fitting into the splash well or out the side of the boat.

Either way will work, but it really depends on what exactly you want to do with it.

Most commonly it is drained overboard through the side of the hull for simplicity's sake.

If used for a fish live well, bait well, or fish box, the out the side system works best because draining fish parts, scales, blood, etc. into the engine well is an unnecessary complication.

Are you going to use it as a live well?

Or do you want to use it for storage? Battery holding?

Does it fill up with water from condensation, boat spray, or boat washing?

Do you need to better seal the hatch cover?

Here's a LINK that discusses the topic of live wells and drains.

Here's a LINK to a discussion of water in the lazarette and how to deal with it.

Not sure yet what we might do with it but the fish got loaded in and put on ice last time out so it might be a fish tank/bait/well you know. I will be doing more camping/fishing as time permits in the future but for now I just might wait and see. Thanks for the comments.

Mine drains through the side. I've used my as a live well but I don't have it set up set for aeration or water recirculation so it's only marginally useful. I was hoping to put a stand pipe in the drain so I could pump water into and have it drain through a screen but I can't find an appropriate fitting to screw into the drain hole. It's close to a 1/2NPT but not quite... that's a job to figure out on another day. If anyone knows of fitting source that will allow me to adapt the drain to a plastic pipe, I'd like to hear about it.

I have used mine many time to store fish. That's a LOT easier once you rotate the hatch lid so it opens with the lid up to the outside. Otherwise you have to reach around the lid to get the fish in and with an active, slippery fish, it doesn't always work out as intended. I only had to lose one decent fish to this before I rotated the lid. :sad Once you do use it to store fish, I recommend filling it with some water and bleach afterwards. No amount of simple rinsing will get rid of the fish slime and it only takes 1/2 a day in the hot sun to create quite an odor.

Finally, the guy at the factory who wired my boat, very cleverly ran screws into the bottom of the lazarrette (which I had asked to have set up for a fish box). I had to seal all those holes after I first tried to use it as a live well. Next time I buy I new boat (this was my first boat), I wire it myself.

Roger, my drain is 1/2 NPT. I'm able to screw a Home Depot PVC street L in tightly and it seals fine. I'm putting the system together this week with a removable transom mount pump and a standpipe routed over to the side of the tank so I can grab those little 'dines without the standpipe sitting in the center.
