Poor mans AK adventure or, captain license blog, the sequel

Ken – I checked your photo album and could not find any photos of your AK adventure. Hope you didn’t forget the camera?

Don’t feel bad about the water being flat, I am sure it will get lumpy before you finish your tour.

Ken-

Thanks for the update on your adventure!

Sounds like a manageable miixture of fun and new expriences, especially for an old guy like you near retirement age!

I'm sending you the requsite beer supply! Should arrive at the end of the week. Had to send the tank car up on the Alaska Marine Highway System.

Suggest you order one of those Shaker Siphons discussed on he "Fuel Cans" thread for offloading the tank car to your thirsty gullet daily. 25,000 gallons should last all summer, with a little for your new friends...

actually there is plenty of beer to be found here but I had to have some kind of beer reference. I have a camera and will get to taking pictures later, there is so many new things coming at me now, taking pictures hasn't been considered, little everyday things like where to get a drink of water or coffee, how to wrangle up lunch names of boats and people....overload, today it will be easier cuz I got a handle on the daily, mundane stuff.

Fishing- hootchies & flashers on a downrigger at about 150' seem to be popular, yesterday we went outside and down to Deer Harbor, there where about 20 boats fishng around there

must find coffee

working my arse off, got pictures, will post if or when I find proper cable. All this beatifull scenery and I think I have more pics of C-D's than scenery. There are about four of the older charter versions working the waters around Deer Harbor there are about two of the old Tomcats here in the Cove and many of the newer version ChillKats around (old C-D TC plan built by Blacksomethingortheother boats). I've been working on a new Little Hoquim built pilot house v hull, it's a nice boat but am looking forward to a tour of duty on the ChillKat.
long days, good food, good folks, good fishing

Hunky Dory mention that they may pass back through here, I've been keeping an eye out for them.

Ken,

I am SO envious! That would be a great job for a summer! If you see any of the 27's up there get some pictures for me. They are so far and few between that seeing them would be a treat. I'd also like to see more pics of the big cats.

Hey Ken,

Good to hear from you! Sounds like you’re going to need to come back to your “normal” job to get some R&R this summer. :)

Sounds like I should throw in the downrigger for the trip up north. :idea

Waiting for some photos….

Enjoy yourself,

Don :beer

Ken,

Just thought I’d float this thread up and see how your “vacation job” was working out for you? Well????

I’ll have some micro-brews for you regardless of any evaporation that occurs on the trip up to Elfin Cove :beer :beer :beer :beer

It's going good, earlier in the week things where pretty stressfull as everytning was new. I'm starting to get settled in and feeling comfortable. Yesterday was the first day that I sarting to relax and enjoy the day.
That would make my week to to see the Knotty-C tied up in the harbor, I've been looking for the Hunky Dory, or any C-Dorys but have yet to run into any that aren't charters

camera cord is on the way

I have finally got the technology squared away and have posted some pics http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_ ... _photo.php

I learning that this wouldn't be a very good retirement job, very long days and no days off. It is enjoyable, get to meet lots of nice folks and hook up many fish. A person has to fish hard..rod hours, rods working are very important and no matter what, the guests have to be having a good time....kind of hard to do when you're scratching around for salmon and there are 40 commercial long linners out your front window :( I did have a day off yesterday, fixed a pluming leak, replaced two light fixtures, reworked the lighting in one room and assembled/installed a screen door, was sure glad to get back on the water today.

I'm learning a bunch about fishing as they are sticking me with different captains, each with their own techiques. I have the feeling that the ChillKat is the low man on the totem pole boat and that I may be running it before the month is over.

I've seen a lot of nice fish, kings, silvers, black bass, yellow eye and hallibuts, a boat brought in a 270# butt the other day. The biggest butt I've been involved in catching was 70#

This outfit runs-
two 34' Baja Cruisers that are well regarded
two North River pilot house boats that will end up just getting used this season and replaced
A new Little Hoquim 34' pilot house with twin 250hp Suzukies
and the 34' ChillKat which is not thought to highly of, mainly due to the ride quality and noise, I have yet to work this boat but they say the windows rattle so loud that it sounds like rifle fire

later,
ken

Ken, thanks for the update & photos. Sounds like hard work, should ease up a bit when you get your rhythm going.
That "tub" with the green trim on the roof, is that the Little Hoquium? I'd sure like to see a few more shots of it if it isn't a bother.
Stay safe.

Please ignore this post. I corrected some spelling on the above post and this window came up and I'm too computer illerterate to make it go away.

Ken,
Nice pictures. I have some friends that fished Eagle Charters about a month back and said it was a 1st class act. I'm sure its a little different looking at it from your perspective, but a great experience none the less.

Just want to confirm that this boat is a 34' because the current ChillKat being offered by Blackfeather is a 30' model (which I am keeping my eye on for a possible future boat, as well as on boats in the 30' range from C-Dory and Ranger). Sounds like QC issues may be a big consideration with Blackfeather.

Thanks for the photo's Ken! C-D1 and C-D2 look like they might be the same boat. Interesting as they have an offshore bracket. They must have been custom cabins as well. I wonder if those are the 26' Pro Angler models or older 27' with custom cabins.

Interesting comment on the NR as well. I'd be curious to know what they don't like about them. Several people down here that I know really like the NR/Almar boats.

Ken-

Thanks! Nice photos of beautiful scenery!

Too bad the expected thrill and excitement turns into real work and repetition,
but you'll still have fond memories of your summer after it's over and you're back at home again.

Enjoy what's left of it the best you can. Keep us posted of any new developments and photos!

Joe. :wink

don't get me wrong, it is fun and exciting and I hope to work here for many more years, but it is a lot of long days. I suppose part of the hard work part comes from me being green, another part comes from this being a first class outfit, everybody goes the extra mile to ensure guests have a great time.
The North Rivers came with another lodge that was purchased. They are nice boats and ride pretty well but the boss doesn't like them. One reason is the head in the V-berth is not a hit with the ladies & they favor bigger glass boats here. I believe it is corect that the ChillK is 30'...every thing just seems bigger up here :) I asked the boss what he thought of it and it spawned a lengthy story about the quality of the workmanship at the factory, in the end, he sent a crew over to finish the boat so it would be ready for the season.
The C-dorys say pro angler on them and thee are about three of them that run out of Gustavas, the pics may be of the same one, I can't tell um apart. I'll get some more pictures of the tub

the salmon fishing was slow again today, we had two couples with us and still had a blast, ended up with 4 silvers, one king, 20 black bass, a limit of yellow eye and 8 hallibutt on light gear. One thing I was worried about was guests from hell but so far all of the guests have been really great, fun, folks. It makes it worth while staying out later, knowing that you'll be late for dinner and have to get up early and do it again tomorrow to get these folks their dream fish on their last day. :)

life is good, check in next month when it will nothing but a cold rainy, foggy bugger, my tune may change.....but for now, it's all good

hey Russ, when are you booking a trip? can't let your friends have all the fun :)
