Hi C Brats, I'll be on the road all this Fall with Kerri On and in checking with my cell phone plan in Canada I could trade my cruising kitty for the cost of the roaming plan!

I thought I could buy a phone to us in the states once I get there, anyone with a good idea on cheap basic cell email phone. I don't use it much for phoning just want to stay in touch with family and friends in Canada. Anyone using thiers in bout Canada and US from a US base with good sucess?

Thanks George

George, they sell "disposable" phones with refillable minutes here in the US, at convenience stores (like 7-11). Never tried one and don't know if you could call Canada on one but I'd check it out and see. They are pretty cheap, I think.

Do you have an unlocked smartphone that you use in Canada? If you do, I imagine you could simply buy a SIM card in the US and prepay for minutes or data as needed. I've used an unlocked BlackBerry in other countries and it works quite well...you get a local number so incoming and outgoing calls in the country you are in are cheap, and you can often use Skype over WiFi to make international calls. I've added tethering in too, and it's often cheaper than paying for wifi at hotels or internet cafes.

I don't know what the prepay options are like in the US, but I'm sure there are other websites with lots of information about this. I'm interested in the same thing for Canada, if you know anything about it. Good luck!

MY first cell phone was from Tracfone and with a pay as you plan (add minutes). Since then, there are several telcos selling pre paid phones.
n2cw Like Charlie said, start at Walmart

Using WiFI hot spots is another option and it is free

Many food establishments like McDonalds, all public libraries, hotels, airports, etc have free WiFi.

My home DSL service (AT&T) comes with free dialup service with hundreds of locations. We used it for yrs on Eidsto Island, SC, Yellowstone, etc, Black Hills, Tetons,.. Just need a plain landline. It was slow for web browsing (many ways to improve your web experience by not loading graphics, no ads loading, no streaming, no Flash, etc, stripped down browsing I call it) but great for POPing email accounts using POP email clients like Outlook Express, Pegasus, Eudora. Set it to download email headers, connect then disconnect. Click on the messages you want to read its full content, connect again, download messages, disconnect read then send replies and new messages. Also turn off automatically downloading of attachments, just pick the ones you want then download them

If you read this far
thanks a million

George,

Walmart, with their Trac Phone type. about 45 a month for unlimited. Get the one that uses the Verison service, (I think you have 2 choices of service). Don't know about calling into Canada though.
