Permatrim Hydrofoils

Well, today I passed the trim tabs ,that I never installed, on to another Brat and now have just got off the phone from ordering the permatrim hydrofoil for my motor.
After talking with Jon on C-Lou I have decided to go that route. we will see how they work out soon.

Roger - if it works half as good as the one I made for my 16 Cruiser, you will like it. There is no way I would ever consider taking mine off.

Here is a hydrofoil for your consideration in the future. I have one on my Boston Whaler 22' Revenge V-22 ( 200hp Mercury) Unlike the Dory, this baby is stern heavy and Bob's Stabilizer plate does wonders on the hole shot. The boat will plane at slower speeds, and handles turns much better without slipping. I just ordered another one for my dory because they have changed the design since my last one. The new design, somewhat like the permatrim has the fins added. Bob's product is made of cast alumium and look to be slimmer then permatrims. They cost 39.95 plus tax and shipping.

I have trim tabs and purchased this item to assist in handling at slow speeds, hole shots and to lessen the rear end drifing at slow speeds.

I will let you all know how I like the performance on the Dory when I get it installed and sea trialed.

Just wondering, does anyone have both Bennett M120 trim tabs and a Permatrim? We've only been able to take the boat out twice since the trim tabs were installed and I guess it takes some getting used to. I really liked the way the Permatrim raised and lowered the bow and I don't feel nearly the effect using trim tabs.

C-Dancer: I have the Permatrim and just installed the M120 Tabs. Life is keeping me busy (high gas prices :cry don't help) and I haven't tried the combo yet. We carry two big dogs, always beach camp and just plain carry tons of stuff. I am looking forward to the lift/lower and balance control that should be available.

It sounds like you had a Permatrim and took it off? I think the Permatrim works because of it's size. Flat so it doesn't drag like the wing shaped fins. And long so as water passes over the top shoves down on it to raise the bow. Or if the rear is slightly down the water then pushes up on the Permatrim for lift. Very difficult to cavitate the prop is another bonus. Very satisfied with mine. The tabs should just make things "more better" :thup

Thanks Chris, actually the only reason we don't have the Permatrim any longer is that we repowered to a Suzuki DF90 from the 70 hp the Permatrim was attached to. As I said in the earlier post, I really liked the Permatrim, miss the lift it provided. I loved the way our boat tracked with no porpoising or getting squirrely at higher speeds. Yes we were very satisfied as well with the Permatrim. In the first two trial runs with the trim tabs, we noticed the stern getting a little squirrely at the higher speeds. Of course, we still must get used to using TT's and setting the motor trim correctly to optimize the TT's. We plan on going out on the boat next weekend but if you beat me to it, let me know how it works out for you to have both the M120 and the Permatrim.

We just put on Lenco 9by12 from river marine supply in miami for $347 plus tax and shipping Great deal they work Great .The only problem we had was we had to move the swim step I think the new one's from the factory are higher . The Lenco 9by 12 will intrude into the motor well with the elec cable you must reroute the cable under the motor well no problem a few s/s clamshells and goop. problem solved The 12by 12 would bring the angle of the cylinder down We needed 15 inches from bottom of boat Good luck JIM on the Duck www.rivermarinesupply.com

Dogon. Please post some picks after you get them installed. I'm ordering Lenco tabs next month. I'm afraid 12" may stick out a bit aand hit the kicker.

Did you see those 9 by 18 from Lenco? On the other thread there are complaints that the 9 by 12 is to small and the 12 by 12 is to wide. I gess not because of the kicker but thought I would ask.
Tony

The lenco 9by18 would interfere with my transducers and anything more then 9in sticking out could affect me putting on a kicker motor just my thought s on this . The 9by 12 's work great unless you have 500lb offset to one side tell your friends to loose some weight

Dan,
I have been considering the Lencos also. It looks like from their website that the edge mount and standard mount both use the same actuator. That would mean the edge mount would not move the tab as far down as the standard mount? Do you feel this could be a factor is which one to choose? I know in your case you were looking for the lower mounting height. I don't have a swim step so that wouldn't be an issue for me. Very interested in your final results and satisfaction with the edge mounts.

Well...Bennett M120's installed and working. I love them! Now for some comparsions; Jennykatz installed Lanco (Electric) and they have a much quicker response time over the Bennett's (Hdro) but the overall lift of the stearn and the laterial control equals out the same once they are in position and you have the motor trimed out.

I still need to do some longer runs to find my sweet spot (rpm, speed, trim, fuel flow).

I will report back then.

Here is some good info on both brands of tabs.

After getting over drilling several holes in my boat the install was just like the video said. Easy... I haven't got mine wet yet.

Some things I noticed on the Bennett M120 sportabs: The shape of the tab is smaller than other brands but because of its shape and the turned down sides it (pressurizes the water) underneath and provides the lift of a bigger tab. The turned down sides should help control the flat bottom boat better than a flat tab. The "hook" style hing is about as strong as can be and about impossible to wear out, compared to a piano type hing. Lastly the TabMan really seems to stand behind the product for as long as you own it. Far to few companies do that these days... :thup

Forgot to mention a few more observations on M120's I had worries over: One is the hydro lines fit below the engine well with ample room behind fuel tanks, the cylinders fit under the swim platform without notching it out. And the amount of down angle available on the tabs is insane! When fully lowered they drop like the air brakes on a 747.

catdogcat,

I just responded to your Wallas question on the other thread. My recommendation on the trim tabs vs heater -- get the trim tabs. Always better to get the boat running properly first, then work on creature comforts afterwards. My 2c.
