Perfect cup o' Joe

OK folks. You wanna keep it simple and you like your instant coffee? Hell why even bother with the hot water. Just eat a spoonful of instant every morning. :disgust If you're drinking it you obviously have no taste buds to damage anyway :crook .

I agree!!!
My fishing buddy is always using that instant stuff. One day he surpised me by pouring coffee from the pot---- I took a drink and spit it out  --- he put instant in the coffee maker to try and fool me. There ain't no getting around that taste.

edit-- I always give him only half a cup when we are at my place---- so he can add water and weaken it. His wife tried to drink my coffee straight, once. For some reason most people don't bother my coffee. Thats good, cause then they don't ask me to make it at the office!!!

Well Bill.... guess El must of gotten rid of her pantie hose on Halcyon.... On the mountain in PR on a mission trip the'd just toss the grinds into the bottom of the boiling pot, pour it off thru a coat hanger drapped with pantie hose.... hopefully cleaned 1st.... instead of using one of those FANCY screens you have. You must have at least one other purpose for that screen on your boat... what is it?

Yep, you're right, Brydman -- another use for the cone and filter is to get scudge out of dodgy gasoline for the boat. 'Course the next time you use it for coffee you have to stand back from the flame.

Oh, and speaking of panty hose, Pat -- can you keep a secret? You know what real cowboys wear under their levis? Yep, panty hose! Keeps you from chafing if you've been out of the saddle awhile. Heard a great tale from a slightly snokkered cowpoke one dark night around a campfire -- related to the time he was rounding up strays in deep snow in the Monitor Range in Central Nevada in January and it was minus a bunch below zero, and he had the urgent need -- well, he was wearing his panty hose, and you can imagine the rest. He wrote a poem about it and presented it at the Cowboy Poetry Contest in Elko NV the next year and won a prize (Yep -- three pairs of XXXL panty hose).

And speaking of filtering through hose -- one time in the high country of the White Cliffs in southern Utah we filtered coffee through a pair of (only slightly [maybe a week]) worn socks when the dash of cold water wouldn't drop the grounds in the cup fast enough. It worked so well that we labelled that technique expresso, and the HighBarbarys still call it that down there -- and, Dan, us Barbarians proudly thought it was better than any of that store-boughten machine-made espresso stuff.

So, next time we're together, folks, lemme make you a REAL cuppa coffee. ... What's that you said? ...

Yep! XL fits perfectly.

Also, Dan, in our experience, most macho cowboys seem to be in John Wayne flicks -- the real ones are all bent over and just ache.

Espresso! Latte! Panty hose! I must have made a wrong turn somewhere. Catman, check that GPS and let me know where the nearest Dunkin' Donuts is. Jeez, before you know it they'll be payin' for a 12 ounce bottle of plain water.

Sheeesh -- four pages on a cuppa. Hey -- forget those grinders and energy-demanding perkers -- Get a plastic cone ($1.29) and some paper cones to fit inside (pennies), spoon in some coffee (ground fine at the market, whatever kind suits your fancy, and as many scoops as you wish) and add boilding water (heated on the stove) -- result: Perfect cuppa. Want expresso? Add a few more scoops of coffee.

This system works so well, it is what I do at home also. Absolutely simple, foolproof, and results in very good coffee.

Da Nag - Almost two years later on this thread; do you have any updates on your choice for espresso machine? Looks like the Solis SL70 is out of stock now. Is it still being sold in the US?

Can anyone recommend a good press pot that is made from plastic or lexan?
I've seen small ones but I would like one that makes 2-3 cups or more.

Well I just don't know what to say-literally! I can't handle the fancy coffee lingo, nor do I want to. I yearn for the drivein window at Dunkin Donuts. Two words do it "Coffee, regular". Of course, me and John Wayne are/were men of few words. :peace:

Nice, a little spendy though. Great idea, can you drink it right from the pot? Now I just have to see if my grinder will run on my 12v inverter.

Who would believe 5 pages?

I must put my 2 cents worth in the brew. Sorry to bring a negetive thought to this other wise positive discussion. What I don't like is STARBUCKS coffee. Way to bitter for my taste. Lucky that we have a local chain of donut shops that make wonderful coffee and it is only $.89 per cup.

On board we use the melita cone thing and pour directly into a thermos. The aroma in the morning is wonderful and sitting in the cockpit looking over the water can't be beat.

I am an avid coffee drinker and I too dislike Starbucks coffee. The main problem I have is that it never seems to be fresh and they never put a roast date on the bag. I always buy from a local roaster so I know exactly when it was roasted (within a couple days). I have to say one of my favorite parts about camping out on the boat is that great cup of coffee in the morning brewed right on the stove. So I don't think this topic is to far out. Plus Da Nag is also a coffee aficionado. He gave me some great advice on my home espresso machine along with some other great tips right here on c-brats.com.

El sleeps a little later than I do, so every morning, for many years, she has greeted the day with a mug of freshly dripped hot java beside the v-berth or bed -- so every day starts bright and full of the sunshine of her smile (even on those grey mornings of the Pac. NW).

I have to agree - nothing beats the early morning quiet, looking out from Luna C's windows, with a cup of hot coffee in hand.
I've been using a percolator (was my grandma's!) and the coffee is definitely worth the wait! but recently I got a thermal coffee press and it is THE BEST!!! Just put in the coffee, pour hot/almost boiling water in, wait 4 minutes, and press. Nothing but the best coffee in the world - and the fact that it's thermal keeps it warm until I'm ready for the next cup.
Life is good!

HERE'S a coffee grinder for you.

And HERE is an interesting take on a coffee press, but not one I like much.
