Penobscot Bay Cruise Phenomenon

Several of us Maine C-Brats cruised Penobscot Bay for 4 days this weekend. Typical SW winds in afternoons kept the bay bumpy most days. But, Sunday morning the bay was smooth and flat like glass with no waves. Returning from Bucks Harbor to Rockland at 20 mph (occasionally at WOT for fun), I saw a phenomenon I’ve never seen before.

On the horizon there was a dark line at the sea/sky interface. This must have been about 4-5 miles away given only 4 ft height of my eyes at the helm. After about 10 minutes the dark line was more pronounced between the glass smooth water and sky. The line kept getting thicker, and I realized it must be a wave. Sure enough, about 15 minutes after first seeing the line we were in a boat wake. There were about 4 waves close together less than 1 ft high. Then no more line and flat smooth water. I’ve never seen this phenomenon before. It amazed me that the boat wake traveled for miles undisturbed by the calm waters. Kinda like that butterfly wing flapping thing I guess.

I've had some recent experiences with wakes, mostly my own. Cruising in glassy calm waters, I've stopped to take a picture only to have my wake catch up with me and ripple the water. Looking back, I can see it spread miles to each side of me. I can't help but think that I've disturbed the whole surface for miles.

Another experience is when passing a large vessel, like a BC Ferry, a mile abeam in a light chop. I have to remember than in about 10 minutes, with nobody in sight, a 3' wake is going to suddenly appear. No time to think "what is that?" Slow down, turn into it, and splash through, and continue on.

Wakes can produce interesting phenomenon. Water and air. As a pilot it was always something to worry about as an unseen disturbance of air from the aircraft ahead of us, crossing or following. Back on the water, the following link is a story that happened last year at a popular place on a popular holiday.

And while the USCG decided not to prosecute, I believe there are still some lawsuits going on...
