Parking a C-Dory

journey on

I bought a copy of the April issue of Wooden Boat, a great mag which points out the skills I never developed. They are running a series on basic boatmanship called "Getting Started In Boats" and this month it's on Powerboat Handling. Some great tips for handling a light outboard powered boat, such as any C-Dory.

It's an interesting article for those of us who have something to learn (me, for instance.) And some of it, one wouldn't pay attention to, unless you've tried to dock a C-Dory. My favorite is this:

" But an outboard powered boat with little underwater profile can be very difficult to back into a slip in a crosswind or cross current, especially if there's a lot of windage (or "sail area"), largely because the flat transome interferes with directional control".

Never would of understood that prior to trying it on Journey On. We talk about how easy the C-Dory planes, and little about how the wind will catch the bow & cabin and push it around. Obviously (now) they go together.

Well, even if you knew that, the article has some good tips, and you can read it whilst waiting for your significant other. Without buying it.
