Overnight to Wilmington NC waterfront

 It was our 29th wedding anniversary on Monday and we decided to take a quick overnight trip to downtown Wilmington. We traveled south down the waterway then north up the Cape Fear River. It was roughly 40 miles each way with great weather. We hadn't been downtown in quite awhile but the city has put all new docks along the waterfront with water and power very clear and secure. There was lots of to do within walking distance of the docks, shops, restaurants, etc. I've posted a few pictures of the trip and yes our dog is named Dory. She's named for the blue fish in "Finding Nemo" not our C-Dory as we had her before we got the boat.

The battle ship North Carolina is a great tour. You see she was never stripped and then rebuilt like many war ship that are now museums across the country. The N.C. was bought as she was coming out of service and is an intact war ship. Really good tour.

The first time my folks came to visit me in N.C. I wanted to take dad down to see the N.C. That was the day we had two feet of snow and it closed every highway around. We of course still drove down thru the snow and the ship was closed.

Almost true Tom. There are parts of the ship which are not open that we got to use for spare parts when reactivating the IOWA in Pascagoula in the early 1980's. I was Tech Director for the reactivation program in DC and made many trips down to NC and to both ships. I traded some used gun "bloomers" [those are the great rubber grommets/gaskets that seal around the 16" gun barrels and keep them from leaking into the turrets for some of her (The NORTH CAROLINA's) Main Feed Booster Pumps, which were nearly new, and for some Forced Draft Blowers.

Thereafter, when we needed parts, we just loaded up a truck with paint and other things that the NC needed to keep her looking new and went to Wilmington and traded for what we needed. I figure we saved the taxpayer a bunch of $$ during those few years of reactivation of IOWA and had a lot of fun in the process!

Those pics sure make me homesick. There use to be a bunch of Liberty ships moth balled not far from the battleship in Alligator Creek. I think they were sold for scrap. It's a shame they didn't keep at least one to preserve that part of history in Wilmington.
