I am not sure if anyone on the forum takes Small Craft Advisor, which if you don't be aware that it is a great magazine, and what I would call the successor to Small Boat Journal.

For the past couple of years, they have been publishing articles by Charlie Whipple as he built a John Welsford design, then started a circumnavigation from New Zealand, where he built the boat.. I just got a note that indicated that Charlie put the boat on the rocks off of the Great Barrier reef. He is OK, but what a tragedy. The trip and dream of a lifetime is gone.

Here's a link to an article about the rescue. It makes a valid point about having a personal distress beacon.

I'm a subscriber and a great fan of Small Craft Advisor. After following the detailed articles on Charlie's boat building progress in each issue of SCA, it is sad to hear about the loss of his boat.

We are in an era where many boating magazines serve as informericals for their advertisers. Small Craft Advisor is a breath of fresh air, emphasizing the experiences of boating in modest boats, rather promoting the "bigger is better" agenda. It is a great magazine published in Port Townsend, WA. If you have a moment, visit www.smallcraftadvisor.com.

Best regards,
Leo
