Non-functional tilt/trim indicator

I have twin Suzuki 150s on my Tomcat.

The tilt and trim indicator for the port motor quit working today- it is in the "off" position (needle fully up).

Is there any simple troubleshooting that I can check for, such as a blown fuse?

Check the indicator lever under the engine. Sometimes they stick and need lubrication.
 
ON my 06 suzuki 90 the trim indicater went south I checked the eng the trim control is cheap plastic it probably is broken, it is covered under warranty though. good luck
 
That has happened several times on my 40hp Yamaha's.....The first time I paid Pacific Marine $6 for the part and $40 to install it.... and I made them show me what broke...... now when it breaks (cheep plastic) I replace the $3 part (internet) in about 5 minutes or less.... (I buy four at a time)

What it is on my Yamaha is a white plastic ring that slides over the pivot bar on the front of the motor and tightens down with one screw.... it is exposed to the sun so they only last two years or less..... miserable design...

It is a poor design. When mine broke on the yami a few years back I just wrapped it with a .020" wire safety wrap. Been holding fine ever since.
 
Eventually both of mine broke on my Yami 80's, probably cracked from summer heating/cooling. Instead of replacing the plastic part to watch it break again I used a radiator clamp, drilled about a 1/8" hole in the ribs, put a brass, panhead bolt up through from the inside, clamped it in place and adjusted. They have worked great for 2 yrs now, haven't touched them since. Sorry, no pictures (built them at night before a trip), but I might be able to get a picture of it installed if interested.
 
could you post some pictures love to see that mine is broken on my f115 yami thanks
 
Jim, Page three in my album has two photos of the problem. Your yami 115 is probably the same design. You should be familiar with the safety wire as they hold most aircraft together.
 
I have twin Honda 40's. I was told that the trim indicators needed to be replaced, at $200+ each!!
 
I just wanted to thank you all...you came through, as usual.

Jim and others- you were right. There is a piece of plastic that protrudes from the sender unit on the right side of the motor near the hydraulic cylinder piston that is broken. It is not the piece that is about 3 " long; it is a piece about 3/4 of an inch in length.

The parts guy at the dealer said that I have to get the whole sender unit- $176. I have not yet talked to the service manager; I am hoping that it is covered by warranty.

ALOK,

If you are talking about the small shaft that sticks out of the variable switch? If so why not try a repair before you replace it? Without seeing the part, two repairs come to mind. You can check the other engine and see what the part used to look like. Rotate the switch by hand and see that it is not bound up. With key on you should see the dash trim guage move up and down.

If there is enough of the plastic thickness left where the shaft broke and the sender is easily removed: You might drill a small hole in the broken end maybe 1/4 depth if it wont go into the switch. Then get a bolt length sized as the broken shaft and screw it into the drilled hole. If the hole is slightly smaller that the bolt you should be able to thread it in. Once the threads are cut you can remove the bolt. Use a hack saw and cut the bolt head off and cut a slit across the bolt end. Now it can be re-inserted with a screw driver. A dab of epoxy would ensure it would not back out.

The other repair would be to get a similar plastic shaft and drill a small hole in both peices. Then fab a pin out of a nail shaft to connect the two parts with 5 minute epoxy.

If you take a picture of the part maybe other ideas would come to mind.

I should be able to get a picture of my fix Saturday, of course it may or may not be the same as your Suzi's. The boat is covered and secured well plus I don't get home till dark.

Unless you KNOW that the part was redesigned to solve the breakage or failure of this part, I certainly wouldn't go buy another one. Much better to fab something that you know will last.
 
Here's a picture of 1 of my 2 new sensor clamps for my Yamaha 80's made from SS radiator hose clamps. They are no longer a problem... 8)

Thanks for the picture. The Suzuki setup is a little different- I will report back on the fix when it is done.
