I just received my order of Insuladd. It is a box of micro spheres which are added to paint. Hopefully the result is comparable to the $95/gallon stuff others have used. I figured I didn't need space age technology or paint capable of being used inside a nuclear sub!

I will add this to a nice Satin finish interior latex paint from Home Depot, tinted to match the CD interior, of course. We'll brush, roll and spray as much of the front compartments as we can and see what happens.

The Insuladd is $65 for enough to treat 5 gallons of paint. More to come. :?

Yes, looks much more affordable than other products and if it prevents condensation, great! Will touch base with you at Friday Harbor to see how you like it. I'm sure many others will, too.

please post your project as you go. very interested in the results.

I brought the boat to the house today to start on the insulation project. I cleaned the berth area and filled the holes where the overhead lights were mounted. I figured we could use them better if they lighted the book you're reading instead of shining in your eyes from above.

Adding the Insuladd to the gallon of Latex paint makes about 1.25 gallons. It's pretty thick, so I thinned it a bit with water.I first sprayed in the storage area in the forward sponsons. I then moved on to the berth area, spraying the walls and ceiling. Backing out of the area, I covered the floor of the berth and left it to dry. This was my first experience with the HVLP gun. It puts on a lot of paint with minimal overspray.

The first coat covered well but there is 7/8 of the original gallon to go. maybe tomorrow.

I'll be very interested to find out how well this works in preventing condensation. Once you're good at it by practicing on your boat, how much are you going to charge to do others?

how is that spray gun different from a auto paint gun? I painted my aft bulkhead with a auto gun and got a lot of over spray but we used a very thin mix.

when it dries please report on any shrinkage issue's and cracking.

Roger, we're all ears on this one. Hope you get good results. Looks good so far.

Tom, HVLP is getting to be the standard guns folks use now. It stands for High Volume Low Pressure, and you get great results with very little overspray. They put down a lot of paint with lower air pressure than a conventional gun. They are great, we use them at work on the helicopters.

Roger, I like the idea of these products but want to apply it without spraying to only select areas of the V-berth at least to start. I just ordered a gallon of the SC1000 product to try out. It was 88 bucks shipped and I plan to apply it with a brush/roller. I will let you all know how this product works as well.

Making product mistakes less frequently through lesson sharing.

really is one huge benefit of the group,

Greg

Roger,
Do you think this product will have any sound deadening effect on the wave slap noise under the berth? We spend a lot of nights on the hook, and are occasionally bothered by noise from a light chop hitting the bow and wing. If the insulation could stop condensation and noise it would definitely be on my to do list.

Brent

Brent,

I'm thinking it probably won't do much there. The slapping takes place quite a ways into the tunnel, an area inaccessible for application. I have coated every surface possible in the storage area from the bulkhead forward. I will be anxious to give it a real world test cruise ASAP.

Spring starts Monday :smile

Roger

so with 7/8 of a gallon left and a hvlp gun for rent? what are you chargeing?

I managed to get another quart and a half sprayed on today. I will probably use up most if not all of this gallon. The paint does have a slightly gritty feel to it because of the micro spheres. I suppose a person could top coat it with an untreated Latex.

Let's see if this works, then we'll talk about a production line :wink

I am thinking this is the approach I will take in the berth, was then thinking about glueing on some marine carpet for that comphy feeling.

Roger,

How thick is the dried, sprayed on layer when you are done? Like maybe at the masking tap joint when you take the tape off. Are we talking 1 millimeter or less, or 2-3mm?

Thanks,

Harvey

Roger,
Nice work. Just one question...what new toy are you going to justify adding to the stern to "counterbalance all this weight" ?

wine bar?

M

Merv,

I'm still adding weight to the bow to offset the 2 8D batteries under the rear seat! Between this project and the extra 160# of water, I may be back in the world of full displacement trawlers. :crook

While removing the forward hatch doors, I noticed a wasps nest hanging from the pos. wire to the windlass! Maybe I should plug that hole around the chain when storing the boat. I thought only rain went down there, guess not.

Roger

Looks really nice, Roger. Those HVLP guns are the way to go IMO. I'm interested in the "real world" test; how it does w/ condensation. I don't really care about the noise.

As to your statement that "spring starts Monday" one can only hope. Judging by the thunderstorms we had today, I'm not too optimistic.

Roger,

Glad you got the wasp nest, that could have been a nasty surprise. I am still finding various 'varmints' waking up on the boat as the temperature slowly rises above the level that TX Jim would regard as hell freezing over and I still have a bunch of assorted animals lined up 2x2 beside the boat looking hopeful.

Since you are now in the same category as a Nimitz Class carrier in terms of power reserves, I guess I know who to raft up with in future. I suppose you need all that power for your Shrimp pots 8).

Getting the June trip organised at last and it looks like we might be sharing the first Miss Piggy of the season if all goes well. Will pm you soon and maybe we should arrange another another 'summit' meeting to celebrate Spring and the gradual draining away of the cabin fever and tensions that always seem to build up at this time of year. Maybe solve a few other world problems at the same time...

M

roger you talked about the surface of the paint having a gritty feel. If the coating is think enough why not sand it lightly with 600 grit? it would smooth is out and should not effect the insulation properties at all???? just a idea.

I wonder if Insuladd microspheres are not pyrogenic silica (tiny glass balls)? It is what makes paint thick so it does not run, also makes polyester resin thick so it can be sprayed on vertical surfaces...also the same stuff that makes Catsup thick (it is edible)... in the business we called it micro spheres..or micro glass... A huge bag of the stuff weighs about 3 pounds.. the bag weighs more than the stuff in it... if tossed into the air...it will float...like dust..
Any fiberglass supply store has it in quanity...real inexpensive. West Systems calls it Microlight.
