America has a new President today,

History is being made today. however we voted, today was going to be historic.

God Bless America, and best wishes to all. Thanks offered for living in a free country to all who have served to make and keep it that way.

Taking time off work to watch some of the ceremony.

(This is not wanting to be a political statement as it is an acknowledgment of this historic day.)

NPR put together an excellent string of inaugural address excerpts from Coolidge to Bush. It's relatively short and quite moving. Few president's are able to live up to the loftiness of their addresses. Oh well...

Presidential Inaugurations:

Excerpts from: Calvin Coolidge, Inaugural Address, Wednesday, March 4, 1925. (No inaugural recording exists of Herbert Hoover.) Franklin D. Roosevelt, First Inaugural Address, Saturday, March 4, 1933. Harry S. Truman, Inaugural Address, Thursday, January 20, 1949. Dwight D. Eisenhower, First Inaugural Address, Tuesday, January 20, 1953. John F. Kennedy, Inaugural Address, Friday, January 20, 1961. Lyndon B. Johnson, Inaugural Address, Wednesday, January 20, 1965. Richard M. Nixon, Second Inaugural Address, Saturday, January 20, 1973. Gerald Ford, Remarks On Taking The Oath Of Office, Friday Aug. 9, 1974. Jimmy Carter, Inaugural Address, Thursday, January 20, 1977. Ronald Reagan, Second Inaugural Address, Monday, January 21, 1985. George H. W. Bush, Inaugural Address, Friday, January 20, 1989. Bill Clinton, First Inaugural Address, Thursday, January 20, 1993. George W. Bush, Inaugural Address, Saturday, January 20, 2001.

What a momentous time in American History!

The first Black President, the greatest economic crisis in at least the last half century, and wars of not only great dangers but uncertain parameters and boundaries!

Great Presidents are created by difficult and trying times.

The Good Lord really set the table up for this one!

This is not the first day I have been proud of America, nor will it be the last, but today I am filled to bursting. God bless this great land. And God bless our President.

I can't help but add that I am not only very proud to be an American today, but also that I'm very proud of President Obama, I wish him the very best, and that I am very happy for our Black and other minorities who must now feel much more at home and at peace with all America and Americans.

Joe. :thup

O-B-A-M-A!!! This truly is a historic moment during the most challenging and difficult economic times in history, unequaled in its severity excepting of course the Great Depression.

I agree with Joe, "Great Presidents are created by difficult and trying times" and I truly believe President Obama has what it takes to lead this country out of this dire situation. The opportunity for greatness is before him. My wish is that the hope he has instilled in the people of this country is fulfilled.

Time will tell...

Our new president certainly possess great vision and eloquence. Now We see if there us any substance.

I am proud to be an american, yet not too proud of our governing body in D.C. I worry that our Nation is finally feeling the real effects of self-interest/lobby-directed/influence peddled and purchased legislation and policy. Can one person derail this juggernaut (even in the ? most powerful position in the world)? I hope so, but remain a skeptical cynic. My 10th presidential vote allows a limited historical view. (23% of these elections)

For the first time in many elections, we had two qualified candidates. Given the magnitude of our problems, it's probably better that the younger is in office. Hope is badly needed.

Reality is the tricky part. American paid too much for houses, boats, etc. with borrowed money. Now is the time for pay back (debt reduction). How the government can solve this bottom line by pouring another 1.2 trillion of borrowed money into this equation is a mystery to me. Guess we'll know in a couple of years.

Patty here. I am subbing in a first grade today. The kids know exactly what's going on and why it is historic! I told them when they are adults they will remember the day when they were in the first grade and history was made. I turned the TV on and they were excited to witness it!

I don't know when our presidents stopped writing their own inaugural addresses, but Lincoln comes to mind as a person who wrote his own. Hence we get the genuine expression and thoughts from our leaders way back when. But today the president(s) have a gaggle of speech writers who craft language to mesmerize and cajole the masses. President Obama may be the whole package, and then again, he may not be. I have noticed when he has to speak without notes, he sounds like an ordinary intelligent well-educated man, but nothing exceptional. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair comes to mind as a person who could really communicate in the English language, without notes or teleprompters. But Obama's persona is made for a nation of visual worshipers. Picture Lincoln today with his homely face and high squeaky voice trying to get votes for president. Not a chance. We are a confused and divided nation. Hope may help keep us out of the valley of dispair for a while. I don't envy our new president. His tasks appear to be almost insurmountable.
We can only watch and wait and "hope" our nation's best interests are fulfilled by his leadership. John

Just an FYI - according to what I've heard, Obama's speech today was his own words. He both writes AND speaks well (and he can pronounce multi-syllable words without problems).

To echo what rogerbum and Yellowstone said ...

I was ON the mall today, watching the inauguration ceremony. It was cold, but an exciting time and place to be outside. I was also very impressed with the "regulars" around me (this was the standard, non-ticketed, unwashed masses area back towards the Washington Monument) and how well they knew all the people that kept flashing up on the JumboTron: Senators, Congressmen, governors.

And it's exciting to have a president who is such a natural speaker and orator. I hope more and more people can get involved with civic projects and help bring about the change that's generated so much hope.

IMHO, Obama is the most eloquent speaker I've seen in a long time. The manner in which he spoke so clearly, smoothly, intelligently and eloquently as he did during the debates was very impressive to me. His responses were clearly not written out on notecards in advance but came spontaneously from a man with outstanding oratorical prowess.

From this day on, I choose to look ahead with hopeful optimism, for today is the dawning of a new era for this this country.

Well, Obama is now our 44th president, and certainly he starts his presidency with the hopes of a vast amount of people behind him. Let us pray that he does his job well, and the future is a better, honest place.

We can only hope that "cometh the hour, cometh the man."

Boris

Along with others here, I am proud to be an American, and grateful for a celebration of peace, hope, power and humility, all done in a peaceful atmosphere.

Thanks to each one here for their contribution and

Thanks to Mike and Bill for keeping this place up, running and orderly.

i agree with the majority of statements made thus far, but would like to add, with this great moment will come great tax increase!
the new government will make changes, and if it's good for them why not for me, therefore, i will duplicated their business model. so, yesterday i took the day off, invited my staff to dinner and a night of dancing.
today we are back at work, fine tuning our insurance agency business model. effective immediately, first, we must hire more staff, second we must change our insurance rates so that they are now based upon one's ability to pay. for those who have little or no income we will provide you the same quality of coverage, but at little or no expense.
last but not least, we will delete all exclusions to coverage and will subsidies each policyholder with all home/auto maintenance issues.
should we need more operating capitol we are prepared to force those policyholders who have worked, saved and strived to succeed, to give our business a portion of their gross worth. we will then decide how best to spend that money for which we had appropriated.
i will keep you informed as to how this new business model performs.
pat

i'm not seeing black or white, just responsibility for ones actions or the lack there of. i hope he succeeds but not at my expense. those who know me, know i am a generous person, i am by choice, would not want to be by force!
seems like we vote for the person with good intentions and then they get to washington and all hell breaks out.
my recommendation would be to pay down debt, put money away and enjoy each day.
best to all,
pat
