New owner, Old Question

Guys,

I just launched my new (to me) 16' Angler. She is such a beauty. How is that you just smile when looking at her?

I know all of you have been asked this question a trillion times, but are trim tabs really important. What about the Permatrim I've heard about? Does it really make a difference and in what respect. I'm on a small lake only 2 miles across. We do get some white cap chop about a foot or two but there isn't enough fetch to really build serious waves.

Rick

I highly recommend a hydrofoil or the permatrim. I have a Sport SE hydrofoil and yes, it make a very noticable difference. Don't limit yourself to your lake, you will want to take other places after you get going.

Trim tabs are probably overkill for the 16.

Rick;

Ditto what Tivo said. Permatrim or other hydrofoil on the main will do nicely.

Try it without it before you buy something else. Once you drill your cavitation plate, there's no going back. It may be fine without it, may not. I don't have a 16 but do have permatrims on a TC255 which are great. You've got :thup one vote and :thdown one vote.....

There is a real difference in the "ride" of the 16' Angler and the 16' Cruiser. With the Angler the helmsman sits closer to the bow so his/her weight should help keep the bow down more than you will find with the Cruiser. I had the 16' Cruiser without the permatrim and could have used it. "Anita Marie" has a 16' Angler so he would be more knowledgeable about its' handling characteristics (see his comment above).

Like Charlie said...."try it without before you buy something else".

Guys, what do you think about the fact the motor already has this troller type device on it. You know, one of those deals that folds down perpendicular to the waterline behind the prop in order to slow the boat down when trolling. When one isn't fishing, the device is lifted 90 degrees and is parallel to the water line. Would this be a suitable equivalent to a permatrim?

Rick

Not to start a war here, but Fred is absolutely correct - if you will notice, it is the 16 Cruiser owners who extoll the virtues of the Permatrim - to the point where many say it is necessary. This is a function of the difference in design between Cruisers and Anglers. In order to make room for the vee-berth on the Cruiser, the helm is pushed considerably farther aft in a Cruiser compared to an Angler. This shifts weight of the driver and passenger farther aft, which in turn causes a considerable difference in running attitude. Without a Permatrim the Cruiser naturally runs with its bow considerably higher than the Angler does. The Angler runs with the bow at an appropriate attitude without a Permatrim, since the weight is farther forward.

And yes, they are beautiful and yes, I too smile whenever I look at Crabby Lou!

I do not think an Angler needs a permatrim. The bow stays down normally without any help.
