Navigation Rules--Free Download

A vessel is required to carry a copy of the NavRules if they are over 12 M (39.5 ft). You can buy a copy at WM for about $11.00 or print on out online. I wonder if carrying a CD with the NavRules on it would qualifiy? I don't think it spells out that it has to be a paper copy.

David,

I would bet that the USCG boarding officer wants to see the text on your CD!!

You should be sure to have your (working) computer to display the CD copy of the Rules.

I think that if I had a 40 footer I would have a paper copy to show the Coasties even if I had the Rules on my computer.

I have never had a boarding officer ask to see if I had a copy of the Nav rules. I have been boarded several times in boats which were well over 40 feet. They just want to look around, and check the usual dozen or so items that they check on the smaller boats. I have always carried a hard copy--including on the C Dories.

Bob,

I was boarded in the Puget Sound and the officer did ask about the Nav Rules.
Since my boat is 37ft it is not required, but the Coastie was not aware of the size limit until I pointed it out.

The officer asked if it was our first boat and my wife responded that it is our third and that I have a USCG masters license. When I showed him the license, the rest of the boarding went much smoother.
