Naming a CD-22

Hello as I mentioned a few months ago I have purchased used CD22 twin honda 40 -

1 is it law that I have to name it if I stay in US for now? I know it has to be named if its longer and officially registered with USCG - I do have title, license and all other cg reqjired equipment


Is there any sea lore about naming a boat - like what if I want to use the name of a ship like the Endurance that had its struggle in the antarcitc. is there some form of sea bad luck using a previous name of vessell that was crushed in the ice - basically I need a course in boat culture -

Where do you get the letters that resist the water and salt -

Congratulations from the owner of one 22' with twin 40's to another! As to naming, there are many boats out there of our size that are not named. I don't know of any law that says you have to name your boat. However...I think most C-Dorys end up named and there is a definite procedure usually involving "Rev. Dave" or "Asst. Rev. Jim", a reading of the traditional christening ceremony, various alcoholic libations with which to wet down the boat, and a christening of the boat at a C-Brat get together. Several boats (including C-Cakes) were christened at this year's Lopez Is. gathering, another bunch were christened at the great Bellingham CBGT. You can see pictures at various albums.

The names come from wherever you choose though some of the true old salts in this group could advise on ones to avoid. There are many places to get the letters, just check the phone book under signs or go on line to boatus or some other boating source. Mine are vinyl decals and I applied them myself..not too much trouble.

I think the obvious solution is for you to come to the Sequim getogether later this month and get your boat properly named. You will certainly be welcome.
 
Hello Jim:

I'd use the Endurance name. It was a fine vessel and had a fine explorer captain in Robert Shackelton. It simply wasn't made for antarctic ice like the Norwegian Fram. No rules about using former ship names.

you don't have to name your boat but, if for some reason you should have radio dealings with the Coast Guard, it sure makes it nice to have a named boat.
By law you must go to a Brat-together and bring food to have your boat properly named or it will sink.
Most towns have a sign shop that offers custom decals for a reaonable price
 
Congratulations Jim. You have been given most of the info you asked for. There is a little folk lore about names on boats. There is also a Denaming Ceremony that can be performed. The naming /denaming makes for a fun event at any C-Brat gathering.

Jim - Congratulations on your new boat. When I had the lettering made for my boat name, I checked on line and the local sign shops in Olympia, Lacey & Tumwater. The reason I asked the question about the law was that friends of mine with a 20+ foot Hewey craft were boarded by the Coast Guard - I think near the San Juans - they had an inflatable kayak on top -

CG told them that they stop that type of boat - as apparently smugglers put stuff in the inflatable - they also said that they needed to have their boat named, even though they had all the lic, title, and usual equipment.

They were near the US/Canadian border so perhaps they were talking about when they cross the border.
