I was going to say what ssobol did: CO is slightly lighter than air, and behaves pretty "neutrally." (Propane does sink, so maybe that's what you were thinking of.) So I have my CO detector at about head height when sleeping, or maybe a touch higher. Not at the overhead or the sole.
