Mounting a Fire Extinguisher

Chris, the starboard bulkhead is to thin to mount an extingisher unless you glue something to the bulkhead to mount it to. I mounted mine by the aft door. The wall thickness is a lot thicker on that aft bulkhead.
Don't mind the women in the forground, she just thinks shes cold.

So what do you use to mount it? I've yet to drill any holes in my boat, do you just use a wood screw, metal screw ? I need to mount my fire extingisher somewhere, feel quilty having it stored away.

Stan at EQ recommended stainless sheet metal screws for mounting into the fiberglass. Use a drill bit one size smaller than the screw size for the pilot hole. West Marine and Boating World carry these screws in different sizes. For mounting a fire extinguisher discard the plastic mount that comes in the box. West Marine has a sturdy metal mount that seems to work well. I believe I used #10 x 1/4" or 3/8" for this mount.

Chris, I don't think I would drill into the hull that low to the water line. I also don't think it is thick enough for a mounting screw.
I mounted an extinguisher in the V-berth right next to the anchor locker door. I thought it would be a good idea to have one at hand at night just in case. Two is all I have on the boat.

On our 25 they are in the cabinet below the sink on the WOODEN wall. Right against the ice box.
We are looking at going to the automated type which have a more boat friendly element which is not harmful to electric items etc. We feel that an automatic system would probably take care of any small fire before we even discovered it! Maybe I just have a phobia about any small blaze around that 100 gal. gas tank!

On my 22 I mounted it on the port side rear cabin using the bracket that came with the extinguisher. I used the backside of the hand hold bolt on that side of the boat. ( I may have used a longer bolt, I dont remember)
Behind the stove would be a bad idea in my opinion. If ( God forbid) you had a grease fire going you would not be able to get to it.

Mounted one on Stbd side forward of Wallas. (Absolutely agree not to mount it over the potential source of fire !)
Used S/S thru bolts, washers and domed nuts together with the metal bracket that came with it.
No signs of any stress cracks after one year despite some "green water" events.

I have two in my 22', one mounted horizontally over the cabin door and through bolted with #8 stainless bolts. The second is mounted by my right knee while sitting at the wheel. I secured a piece of mahogany to the cabin wall with 5200 and mounted the extinguisher with #8 stainless wood screws. That is my usual method of mounting: either 5200 alone or 5200 to wood for a backing and then screws. So far nothing's fallen off the wall.Strongly support the idea of not putting the extinguisher where it may be too hot to reach.

You may want to checkout some other options in Sea Angel's pixs where I have 3 mounted in the cabin - - -
1- on the port side, inside between the rear window & door frame, [access from cockpit]
1- above the Wallas control panel on the head bulkhead, inboard side of head window [access in case of Wallas/cooking fire], and
1- on the V berth bulkhead , in the cabin, in front of the mates seat, under the port sliding glass window [suppliment to others].
I hope to add a forth inside the V berth area later this spring.
All were mounted with #10 SS screws into existing frame work.
I whole heartedly agree with NOT mounting the extinguisher behind the Wallas Stove. When you need to fight that fire, you have to have immediate access to the extinguisher(s). We want to hear more about your fun adventures, not the trials. Good points made by all.

I would suggest that you not mount any extinguishers near the stove or outboard and gas tanks, in that if they catch fire, you won't be able to get your at the extinguishers.
