MONSTER HALIBUT.....

I have fished for halibut very frequently over the last ten years or so. What do you guys think the odds are of catching something like that? Beats me....But I was happy as a clam when I caught back to back 150 pounders one day outside of Seward and it hasn't happened since.
 
I’m happy as a clam pulling in 20 & 30 pounders. My son is always asking me what I would do with a barn door like this. If my back allowed me to get it to the surface I would probable try and take a picture than cut it loose. When I commercial long lined off Kodiak we hauled in 200+ pounds quite frequently and the occasional close to 300 pounder. On the pitching deck I would have to straddle the monster while attempting to bleed it, was 25 years younger in those days.

I'd rather catch four 30 pounders any day of the week than deal with a 100 pound fish. But then again, what is the 410 for? The sea forecast aint so great this week Jay, you going out? I went out last Saturday by Johnstone Bay and really enjoyed the 10 foot swell.....NOT!!! But, the fishing was very good. The silvers were thick, the Lings cooperating, and halibut fast and furious. I wonder how much gas it takes to go from Whittier to Montague? I have never made that trip, have you?

We have been to Green Island and North Montague fished the needle and South Night-> got our halibut limit here in like ½ hour. My son would love to go around to the outside of Montague but that will never happen; he is a buoy hunter.
Definitely going out this weekend. The wife wants to be dropped of on Perry for berry picking while the son and I fish silvers, limited out last weekend. Saw a boat in the middle of 6 boats silver fishing last weekend off southern tip of Perry pulling in butt, think I’ll give that a try this weekend after we catch our Silvers.
Whittier to South Montague is like 80 miles, better to go through Bainbridge passage and fish that area. We did over the 4th and caught all the bottom fish we wanted. Should be great fishing off N.Knight right now and half the miles to Montague.

I totally agree with you on letting the big ones go to multiply.
Last week my wife hooked up in 38' of water off Happy Valley Creek. She could not move it. I tried and for several minutes I though she had the bottom. After a few more I got it about a foot up but 2 head shakes and it was back down. More and steady pressure finally got it coming up ever so slowly. Got it about 10' up by rail pumping. One very big head shake and the hook came out.
We had already planned on releasing it but wanted it to come to the surface to show our Ontario, Canada guests. It never happened. They were impressed anyway.
30-50 lbs is our favorite. The "haliveals" 15-20 lb are too small and more difficult to clean.

Good luck fishing. Silvers are here in the inlet also.

Bingo! Resource management. Take the breading stock and eventually there are few to none to catch. I saw this in Hawai'i. People would take spiny lobster "eggers"; females w/ eggs. When I criticized them due to the above fact, it was like talking to a rock.

The billfish in Hawai'i are now usually tag, photo and release in the large tourneys and the population has stayed consistent.
 
33 gallons to the south end of Montaque in a 25' with 150hp. Best lingcod fishing I've ever seen down there. 30 gallons to south end of LaTouche by way of Erlington passage. Great bass fishing.

One large female halibut can have 600,000 eggs in it or more! It's sad to see the big females killed. I understand how it must be to catch " the big one " heck we're all looking for them but if we don't manage this resource soon there will be none left. Maybe it's time a law was pass to control the consumption of large female halibut. :cry:
