memorial weekend halibut

well over the long weekend we decided to do a little boat camping and forego the derby this weekend. we originally had plans to go to CQ to avoid crowds and fish, but wind and weather forecast were not looking that hot and no one wanted to tent camp in the rain.

so we spend most the day getting boat ready messing with anchor line putting dingy on boat ect. stop for food and hit the docks at 2 pm hoping to avoid the crowds. We had friends that had been fishing all day so when we headed out we decided to go say hi and maybe do a drift or two. once we leave John Wayne we have little expectations due to dock talk of no fish and slow fishing, as well as the few boats we knew were out were getting the donut. Plus we have limited gear and 6 black label herring for bait as we were more just going to camp and hang out. on our way to Dalls I notice a nice hump on my gps and decide to give it a try. our friends were on there way back in from eastern so I shot them my numbers via mmsi. they decide to fish the hump also but quickly move on due to not liking the bottom feel.

half way through second drift and kids wanting to get to camp we decide this will be the last drift. I am tending to one rod when my wife asks "is that a fish?" I look over to see the second rod pinned and bobbing......ummmmmmm yes!... grab it set the hook it takes off and I hand the rod to her. 10 min later or so (gatta love shallow butt fishing)and we have it on the gaff. 45 min effort and a nice butt on the deck. better to be lucky than good sometimes.

this was the first halibut for the wife and the one fish she wanted to get this year. due to weather and usually coast fishing them 6-700' she usually sits halibut out. so it was nice to get this one for her.

oh and the camping was fun too;)

Nice feeesh. I know it seems lucky, but a lot of that luck is due to the applied hours of study you've done. That is what I think is so rewarding, when all that study pays off.

localboy yeah it dropped off last week for the weekend for sure. I usually go to the boat heaven or hook to check numbers on lunch break when certain fisheries are going on.

last week on thursday on the hook at 1pm they had checked 53 boats 96 butts crazy good numbers for mid day and some 80-90lb fish in the mix.

then friday same time had dropped 48 boats and like 33 fish.

and seemed to trend downward throughout the long weekend. we will try the last day June 7th as the son has a t-ball game at 11am this sat.

thanks Rick we have put in our share of time over the years here, and it has been paying off but a good butt in the first hour of fishing in Sequim has to go to luck :)

Jake, Nice Fish -- Had to use that one  and well deserved. Good job and nice of you to pass it to your wife. On another subject, How was the boat camping, and where did you wind up?

thanks Hardee, Yeah we ended up at Sequim bay state park and while the mooring buoys were open we ended up staying on the dock as the kids were having fun checking out things clinging to the dock and gave us a little more room. when I woke up Sunday am and headed out with the family still asleep in the cuddy it was so glass out I was very close to shooting over to the islands for another night away. Decided against it in the end and apparently that was good call via the wife once she woke up..

as far as fishing for butts out of Everett sorry I don’t have any Intel to share. only time I fished the salt over in the Everett Edmonds area was for September Coho when we lived in Monroe.

Hi Jake,

You picked a nice time at SBSP. Mornings are great and it would be easy to make the crossing then, usually. Glad you had a good time.
