maximum weight for 14' c-dory

Hi, I'm looking at powering my c-dory. The manufacturers decal states 35hp maximum and a total weight for the boat at just under 800lbs. I am looking at a motor that is a 35hp and weighs around 160lbs. Does this sound like it is reasonable for the size of boat? Would love to hear some opinions on this matter!

Adam-

If you're trying to save as much as possible of the 800 pound maximum weight for other uses, make a chart of all the brands of engines that offer 35 hp models and study all their characteristics.

Manufacturers can't make a separate engine block for each individual hp model, so you will find (when you compare their 35 hp model with that same brand's 25, 40 and/or 50 hp models), the the 35 may be the same basic block as the smaller 25, or the larger motors, and have the same weight. For this reason, 35 hp motors from different manufacturers may have considerably different weights. If weight is the single over-riding consideration, get the lightest 35 you can find that you find otherwise acceptable.

Note: The E-Tec motors from Bombardier are direct-injected 2-strokes, and are generally considerably lighter than 4-strokes, as much as 100 pounds in the larger75/90/115 hp motors. This weight saving comes from their lack of a valve-train apparatus. You may want to consider this alternative, as the weight advantage is certainly with E-Tec.

Additionally, make a chart out of what you plan to carry in the boat and actually weigh out the items whenever possible. See how much of the 800 lb capacity is left for your engine.

From what I've read around here for the past 15 years or so, all of the new 4-stroke and direct injection 2 strokes seem reliable and generally without major problems. It would be hard to make a bad choice, if this is true.

I'm sue more advice will be forthcoming.

Good Luck!

Hi Joe. The motor I'm looking at is a 2001 Johnson 3 cyl. These motor have had problems with oil injection by this one will be warrantied by the dealer and has had the injection system removed. I'm sure that's a whole other topic. Anyways. This motor has e-start, power tilt and trim. All options I was looking for. I assume removing trim and tilt would save some weight but I think they are important. I guess the only other place to remove weight is In the block ( as you have stated ) I will have to do some web surfing and check out some other options. Thanks again

A quick search on 30hp units turns up Honda, Evinrude, and Tohatsu with options under 200lbs. The others are over 200 and Tohatsu looks to be the lightest at least slightly. 35s are not really on the new menu any more.

Adam- Is that 2003 a "FICHT" engine? I know about the FICHT Saga, but thought it was longer ago than any engine you'd probably be considering.

The FICHT design disaster broke OMC (outboard Marine Corporation) that made Johnsons and Evindrudes and preceded Bombardier's (a Canadian company) buying out of the bankrupt OMC, as I remember.

The basic FICHT story is that OMC designed a direct injection system (FICHT) for their 2-strokes to meet the newer, tighter, EPA emission standards, but only tested the motors at full throttle and idle. Put to work in the real world, at moderate rpms, the engines ran too lean and melted down (more or less)! And I've pretty much always considered engineers to be too conservative and careful!

Doesn't sound like any of the modern 35's are very light (125-150 lbs.).

What I know is that the oil injection system on the 3 cylinder Johnson's of this era is that fuel would leak back into the oil reservoir and dilute the oil. This would obviously cause cylinder damage. The engine would eventually seize.
