Masthead ads

New ads?, I still don't see any new ads. :sad

All I see are Google ads and they change so my 'puter isn't stuck.

Are the new ads only for the privileged few?

Bill,

Need help here! :crook

Larry - you're likely running an ad blocker of some sort.

Marty - thanks for the comments. It's not too often one gets complimented when introducing advertising, but we did put a fair amount of effort into ensuring ads are tasteful and professional looking. One of our requirements, was that no ads be animated - we've no desire to look like the Las Vegas strip around here.

Bill is right about the ad blocker. I could see the graphics and the link (in the upper right corner) in Safari but not in Camino (OS X port of Firefox). Once I went to the Camino preferences and told it not to block the popups I started seeing the ad graphics.

Typically you can block popups but also maintain a list of favored sites from which you will accept popups. Unfortunately that feature does not work with c-brats.com (for me.)

I'm sure we're simply talking semantics here, but just to be clear - I'll allow anyone to deliver 10 solid kicks to my groin, the day we introduce popup advertising.

We're not delivering popup ads - just banner ads.

RE ad blocking software - I use it myself, so it would be hypocritical of me to condemn it. Still, I'll be making a couple changes that will make the ads get around the default ad blocking filters out there. This won't stop determined folks from blocking the ads here if they so choose - they'll just need to do so manually in their ad blocking software, for this site.

Fortunately, it's not a huge issue here. We have logs for both total page loads, as well as ad displays. The difference between the two, is roughly the amount of page loads from those with ad blockers. It's a relatively small percentage.

Bill,

Thanks,

Now I can see the light!! Ads, that is!

I did not realise that my Norton Firewall was blocking ads on this site.

I still have Google ads, is that how its supposed to be?

Well...that's a loaded question.

One might suggest, that a commercial product that doesn't block the most pervasive advertising out there (Google ads), was designed that way on purpose. I'll leave rampant speculation and conspiracy theories to others, but let's just say blocking Google ads is trivial, so there's no technical reason Norton ignores them.

RE the Google ads here - they'll disappear at the end of the month.

Once I've made the changes mentioned earlier, the banner ads will appear for default Norton Firewall installations, as well as for many other common ad blockers. But again - it's trivial to set up a manual filter to block them once that's been done, for folks so inclined.

I would think Raymarine and Garmin, etc. would be interested too. I plan on sending a pix of the hat (Raymarine) I won at the factory gathering at SBS08 along with a picture of my table of Raymarine Electronics about to be installed on Captain's Cat. Who says that marketing give-away's don't work!! (Not me...).

Semantics or no, the Preferences of Camino block the ad graphics when I have "Block Web Advertising" checked.

Great Job Bill!! A cool way to see all the ads is to refresh your browser over and over, they'll come up one by one...!! Nice to see our friends up there. Are the google ads going away?

Yep. First of the month. So if anyone wants to join Sailing Singles they only have a couple more days to see it advertised here.

Thanks Mike. BTW, they were a lot less intrusive across the top than down the left as they are now. But, if they're going away, makes no nevermind!

Thanks..

We had two sets of Google ads running previously - the small ads across the top of every page, and a large group of them on the home page. The small Google ads were removed yesterday.

The Google ads that are currently present in the upper left corner of the home page, have been on the home page all along...they were just down and to the right, below the login area. I moved them to the existing location this morning. Yes, for better exposure. But also in preparation for their replacement - privately sold banner ads will take their place.

So yes...when reading the home page, ads will be more prevalent, even though they'll take up less real estate than the Google ads. I'm working on some layout options that will hopefully offset this, by adding additional functionality, and removing stale and rarely used content. For example, the site announcement section was a huge waste of space...taking up prime real estate below the rotating C-Dory picture. It's now gone, and in it's place, I'll be moving the "Upcoming Events" box - enhancing it so text from the opening post is visible. That will hopefully happen later this evening.

I'm also looking into modifying the "Recent Photos" block, so that it includes thumbnails of the new pictures, instead of links to the albums. This will take quite a bit more work, though.
