Mastercylinder Question

You guys and your marginal tow vehicles.....I remember this one time, at band camp, I towed my CD 22 with a Geo Metro.....

My advice, since there was rust in the master, replace all of it as EVERYTHING is probably rusted up in the hydraulic system. Honestly, if you are on such a tight budget that you are looking at ways of modifying a brake system to save a few bucks, maybe you shouldn't be on the water as a new brake system costs peanuts when compared to everything else. Just buy new parts......And, while you are at it, have somebody who knows what they are doing so the rest of us are safe on the highway.

1) I have a Jeep Liberty which tows the distances I plan to tow with no problem. It is a good all round vehicle as I tow the Jeep behind my motorhome 25-30K mi/yr, explore off road trails while camping, and need the double-low 4-WD to maneauver my poontoon and CD 22 trailers in soft sand on my property where I store the boats. It is a great vehicle for sub-urban and state road driving where most of my non-motorhome travel is done.

2) I believe in learning how to maintain everything myself. I could write a check for a new trailer today, but will know the source of parts and have the ability to maintain the brake system myself before I am again on the highway. If any of the parts do not function properly they will be replaced.

My wife and I have owned 2 sailboats (lived aboard one for 2yr), a 37ft diesel trawler, (in which I installed my own bow thruster and diesel generator) and we recently retired our positions after 30yrs as captains aboard a 50 stateroom cruise ship that cruised all the waters of the Great Lakes, Canada and U.S east coast, Bahamas, Caribbean Isl, Panama Canal, and Erie Canal. We each have 3,000 ton Masters License. So we feel we have every right to be on the water. That said, we are new to C-Dory and even though it is the smallest cruiser we have ever operated, we don't feel we know it all and have learned a lot from all the helpful posts and answers we have received. We thank everyone for this!

"Any answers and advice would be appreciated."

R&D,
30,000 ton masters license and what ever other titles you have does not really matter to me. You asked for advise and a number of folks including myself think your tow vehicle is a little light. But not to worry, along with titles and opinions they and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee at Mickey D's. I wish you safe travels.
Sincerely
Dave Deem

Ladies and Gents:

I know our only rule is be nice, but I really was mostly misread. I wasn't being mean, just trying to keep someone from doing something incredible dumb.

Just so everyone knows, the first sentence was a joke as tow vehicles come up on here all the time as a discussion and it almost seems to be a competition as to who can tow with the lightest workhorse. But, I do think the jeep you have is marginal. However, as you noted and others have too, it is ok. If I lived 10 blocks from the dock I would pull my CD 22 to the launch with my bronco without worries. And BTW it is full-sized rig rated to tow that boat, but I would not tow it 10 miles on a marginal road with it as the boat really moves it around. Safe? I guess I better go to church a lot just in case the engineers are wrong. AND, if anything goes wrong as there likely will be no recovery.

Also, I think at some point, it may have come across as I was calling you some kind of cheap skate, but I really wasn't. I was just saying if you really are in such a tight spot that you can't buy the right replacement parts, you really not be out on the water. And if that is case, you really shouldn't as you will be cutting corners here and there and here and there and so on and so on. That never is a good situation for you or your passengers. As you noted, that clearly isn't the case.

However, the last part of what I said in having someone experienced fix it right, I really meant. For safety and liability reasons the person working on your trailer isn't going to do something incredibly stupid due inexperience (at least I hope). Are you? I hope not, but you were pretty close to going down that road. You were tinkering with the idea of modifying something to work when you could just buy a whole new part. To your credit, at least you asked before you did it.

If we were closer, we could just say sorry and give each other a hug or something, but I really was just trying to help. I am sorry if I came across as brash or a jerk (again)......

Good luck with your repair and I hope you find a quick and easy solution :)

Dave,

I was not at all offended by your post, but yes, I thought Roy would be. The hall monitor types upset me at times too, so can see why Roger's & my comment bothered you. I took Roy's bringing up titles & past boats as just a reasonable way to respond to TR's "maybe you shouldn't be on the water comment" & that your response somewhat snippy for someone new to the site seeking advise. I sure don't disagree with either you or TR about the hazards created by the use of underrated tow vehicles.

For sure, I'm truly sorry that my comment upset you & believe now I shouldn't have posted it. In past post by me on other subjects I have been guilty of being much worse in some of my responses to others comments. Your an upfront tell it as you honestly see it kind of guy, which I appreciate about you & much prefer to those who you never really know where they stand on any subject, but that upfront trait does make for always seen as "just be nice" at times near impossible. There are quite a few others among us C-Brats (including perhaps me) that equally fit this description whom like you, I've very much enjoyed sharing time in person with & others I haven't met, but whom I hope to in the future.

I've been following & enjoying your photos & telling of this years Florida cruise. Sounds like Ginny & you are having a fantastic time.

Best Wishes,

Jay

Thanks to both Jay and Roger. I don't want to beat this to death but typed words show no inflection. I would hestitate to make snap judgements. The be nice part has to be kept in some sort of context. Nice to some one in junior high I think is a little different than people in our age range. I mean no disrespect here but some give advice differently. If people think they have to walk on egg shells here than I think we all lose something. The people who run this site can pull the plug on me anytime they feel I have crossed the line. Posters either follow given advice or go there own way. I in my own way tried to imply we were C-Brats here titles and where you been don't matter. It's like the old Chinese proverb when you point fingers at someone three fingers always point back at you. I'm good. I hope R&D knows I wish them all the best.
