Lower unit lube

Alec,

No slight intended on your skills.

The motors are yours and you should do what you think best.

I wanted you to be aware that if you make any errors, warranty probably won't cover the results.

$400 per motor for service seems high. That would be about 3 hours at $100 per hour plus $100 in parts per motor. $400 total for both motors still seems high, I wonder what the mechanic would do for those 3 hours?

You might want to give E Q Marine a call. Les has a good reputation.

No slight taken, no worries.

I actually bought the boat from EQ. I'm quite sure they'd take care of me. The issue is that I have no trailer, and it's a 40 mile trip over water to get up to EQ, and then I need to get my wife to pick me up, and then the reverse on the way back. I just took delivery of the boat from them a couple of weeks ago and it took us over a month to find a weather window when it would work with all of our schedules.

So, on that note, if anybody has a recommendation for a dealer in the Edmonds vicinity that is directly water-accessible (I see a couple up in Everett but know nothing about them) that would be extremely helpful!

Alec,

Ah, no trailer! Does that mean you have to also pay for a haul out?

Now I see your problem. Sorry, I can't personally recommend a dealer in either Edmonds or Everett.

If you do the work yourself, you might want to buy the parts and oil from a dealer, and retain the receipts. Keeping an engine log with the work done entered in the log might also be a good idea.

Yup. And, to top it all off, I've already got the boat out getting the bottom painted, so my plan was to do it on the same trip.

I'm extremely pedantic about my receipts and logs, so that will all be done (even when I have others do work I keep a detailed log about that stuff, I can't count the number of times that's helped me out). You're spot on about getting the gear from a dealer though, I'm definitely going to be doing that on subsequent jobs.

Thanks!

Just a different opinion.

I prefer to service any engine myself. If a dealer does it and screws up (heaven forbid,) the warranty will not cover it anyway. I've done my own work for years, and never had a problem. I have screwed up and I have repaired it. Always a learning experience. And I learn for what to look.

Also, since engine manufactures don't refine oil, but only buy it from someone else, and mark it up accordingly, I prefer to know what I'm getting. The manufactures DO specify what oil to use, and I follow that spec. And by the way, West Marine isn't a refinery either. They don't spec but only sell. I leave their oil alone. Anyway I use Pennzoil or other reputable brands.

In addition, I don't have to haul the boat/car/truck in, wait and pick it up. I never could afford to have someone service the bikes.

About outboard gear oils.

Advise for consumers,(not engineers or racers LOL).

If the O/B manuf has their own brand of oil, you can use it without worry. If they have a higher priced synthetic of their own brand, its better and more expensive.

If the O/B manuf doesn't have their own brand of oil, use the grade specified in the owners manual. Again, a synthetic of the same grade is better and more expensive.

Gear oils packaged for O/B lower units have a water absorbing additive, which costs more than automotive gear oil, but absorbs water, should it get into the gear case.

If you change your own oil and strip or don't get the plug tight, it can cost you $$. If you learn to do the job correctly, it can save you money.

Used gear oil should not be mixed with used motor oil for disposal. Too much gear oil in motor oil or straight gear oil is toxic waste, and may not be accepted by an oil recycler.

Thats my opinion based on my experience. If you know more that I do, you don't need my opinion. LOL
