Lower Chesapeake Bay - Outer banks

We are planning a trip to the lower Chesapeake Bay through Dismal Swamp Canal and cruise the Outer Banks. Has anyone done this trip and have any suggestions? When is the best time to go to avoid the black flies? Any advice would be appreciated - thanks - Bill J
 
From the home page look for search, I typed in Dismal Swamp and It looks like there are some folks who do a trip similar to what you were asking about in Mid May. As fas the flies goes I bet they are not a problem this time of year. :)
