Let's talk trailers

The @C has a bunk trailer. I have just posted two pictures of the trailer in my album.

My question is about the bunks. Obviously they have to be recovered, especially the starboard bunk.
However, as may not be so evident in the pix, the port bunk has a decided downward slump, while the starboard bunk is straight.

1. Should I replace the port board?

2. Is it better to have the bunks conform to the hull shape or be straight?
I have many of my own answers to this, however don't know what is best for the hull.

3. What is the best method of attaching the carpet to the board? (I know this has been discussed before, a link would be helpful).

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

If you can find some nice straight dry lumber, I'd replace both boards. Usually, the carpet is wrapped around the board and stapled with a power stapler on the underside. Try to find stainless or galvanized staples.

The lumber will flex with the weight of the boat to conform to the hull.

Bill-

Roger is right on about using straight lumber and letting it conform to the shape of the hull.

I do remember Dr. Bob (Thataway) discussing using Monel stapes instead of stainless, etc. Here's the post:

Definately use Monel metal staples- They will last longer than SS--and Arrow makes them for the standard guns. I use an electric gun and it works fine.

Galvanzed ring nails or heavier staples (hammered in) would work--but for the finer staples, the coating would be too difficult and crack off with the stress of application.
