leaking shower fittings/CD25

Leaking shower fittings on the 25' seem to be an issue for many people, which is understandable given the mismatch between the British threads on the fixture and the NPT threads on the hose. I know others have done the research that verifies the British threads and I assume others have experienced my frustration in finding an adapter or any way to transition.

I had resigned myself to a temporary cobble and changing out the whole fixture at some point when -- to give credit where credit is due -- Paul at a cool and very oldtime hardware store in Alameda suggested a possible fix that worked. I recut the threads on the fixture with a 3/8" NPT die and, of course, used about three wraps of Teflon tape. I make no guarantees, but my fixture does not leak at all now.

I have the same problem with my shower and so far have not been able to use it on my CD-25. It seem like when the people were installing the shower fittings they cross threaded the plastic coupling. I have never been able to make this connection without it leaking. I took the hoses off and plugged them up. At least I do not get water in the floor of the boat. I have tried teflon tape, I have tried using 4200, and I have tried new fittings. I think I will next try buying fittings that fit the hose and will at least screw onto the shower nipples and have somebody weld/braze them together. Thanks for your information.

I apologize for no pictures. I'll try to rectify this soon, but we are away from home -- thank god -- and I not good at the computer stuff even there. Just so you know who you are dealing with, I have done about six major remodeling projects with nary a before picture or a process picture. I always have good intentions, but I have never been a picture taker. But I'll try to get on it.

Thanks for the compliment on the generator plarform. It has worked out well.

Now the leak. I did inadvertantly leave out some details. First, the leak is not due to cross-threading. When you locate this particular shower fixture online, the info makes clear that the threads are 3/8" male British threads. This mismatch between the British threads and the 3/8" male NPT threads on the cold/hot hoses accounts for the leak. The factory tried to solve the problem with tape. Didn't work.

As I said, I recut the male threads on the fixture with a 3/8" NPT die. Be very careful to get the die started straight. I forgot to mention that I tossed the plastic barbed fitting and replaced it with brass. In addition to the thread mismatch, the plastic barbed fitting was a problem because it would prevent full tightening because it would simply hop a thread.

Given the cramped quarters, you also have to be careful to get three or four TIGHT wraps of Teflon tape. If it's not tight enough, the tape just gets pushed up as you tighten the fitting.

I'll check back tonight to see if there are any more questions -- and I'll stop in at Pagano's today to thank Paul for a great fix for a very irritating problem.

May want to check the galley faucet also - I believe it may be a Scandvik also. C-Dory must have had a Norwegian Owner at one time.

You are correct -- it is Italian. Our lever broke a couple of years ago when we were in the Keys. While I was unsuccessfully trying to cobble something together at a hardware store, a clerk sent me to a local boat supply store. When I asked about putting something together, the boat supply clerk asked why I did not just order the exact part. I did not even dream it was an option. He seemed to recognize it and pulled it right up. Came from the wholesaler in a couple of days. I do not remember any details, but like I said, the boat supply store treated it like a no-brainer. I do remember it was ridiculously expensive -- maybe something just under $40 for the head only.

We had found water under the sink area at times and assumed it was running down the shower hose and into that area. After a careful inspection, we found the leak at the pressure fittings. I found the cobbled together mess of BSP threads and White sealer and an NPT fitting. Fisheries Supply in Seattle had the correct adapter. Their part # 35825, Scandvik's # SCA10002. With several wraps of Teflon tape, it seems water tight now.

They also have the shower head assembly which explodes when frozen! Their price was about $ 15 if I remember correctly.
