Lawless in Seattle

I was in Seattle 10 years ago and didn't experience anything like what has been described apparently I wasn't in those areas. I'm going back for 10 days June 6th and don't expect to see anything any worse than what we have in Jacksonville Florida. It's at epidemic stages here. Funny when the Super Bowl was here all the homeless disappeared. I often wondered what the police department did to or with them? That showed me that the problem can be controlled. Our Police Chief was on the news the other night discussing the problem and he mentioned 20 years ago the crack problem began and many crack babies were born during that time. He said now those crack babies are grown up and that in a lot of instances is what he's dealing with today.

I'm a 4th generation "Seattleite". 10-15 years ago you would never have seen a panhandler on the streets. Now it is a regular occurance. Usually they aren't a problem. But every now and then you come across one that is belligerent or aggressive. They are the ones that I try to avoid. Now that I work downtown I see them every day. Just last week I had one pounding on the window of my car demanding I pay him. This guy had taken over someones spot and was being a total jerk and was obviously very high or drunk. That was a first for me. Usually I see the same people on the corners every day. They will politely wave at you, or nod their heads at you in recognition. But they mind their own business and don't make a scene.

My wife used to work downtown & catch Community Transit round trip. She'd tell me about numerous encounters w/ transients; urinating, drinking, smelling like you know what; all while downtown. One guy even stood in her station, right next to her and commenced "pleasuring" himself.

The Sheriff's Office, not SPD, now patrol all Metro stations/property etc and we don't put up w/ any of that. Enforcement can be done. BUT it requiRes the political support from the top down. SPD doesn't have that IMO.

It's tough being in law enforcement in seattle with greg nichols and the gang as leaders. I remember during the WTO riots some officers were doing a shift change at a gas station on capitol hill when some local citizens, not anarchists per sey, trapped them inside their patrol car. They then proceeded to try to break into the gas station to turn on the pumps so they could pour the gas on the patrol car and set it on fire, with the officers in it. I repeat, these were adults, local citizens with a very anarchistic bent. I feel for you mark. Luckily my chief was always behind us as long as we tried to do right, and the council was behind him.
