Lake Ontario

Wondering if anyone boats there? Planning a road trip to check out Sandy Pond marina and campground near Pulaski. Also Olcott NY marinas, looking for a place for next season. Sandy Pond would cut 2 hrs off our trip to boat compared to 5.5 hrs this past season. One guy that was at Erie for the season took trips up to Olcott and caught some 20lb salmon and nice size steelhead. Sandy Pond is protected from the Lake ,so you can get more boating time if weather is bad on Lake.

Larry, havn't boated in the areas you described but on Lake Ontario I have launched from marina's west of Toronto(Bronte, etc.) and from Hamilton Harbor to Fifty Point. Also from Niagara On The Lake. A lot different from what I normally experience on Lake Erie. Calm as a bathtub some days but larger rollers when it gets riled up. In the last 17 years I think I could still count on my fingers the number of times I've seen Lake Erie calm. Good salmon fishing around Bronte. Seen some boats fishing the Niagara River through the winter some years.

Regards, Rob

I would look at Oak Orchard river area just north of Albion NY. Nice ramp, there, the Oak Orchard marina I think its called. and decent tackle shops in the area. The river has a T shaped break water as you enter the lake. Good brown trout, steelhead and salmon area. Quick access to deep water seems to be part of the reason. The deeper water provides less fluctuation in water temps due to currents, wind etc. They fish shallow in the spring using planner boards and they get some decent sized brown trout that come into the river in the fall.

Thanks Rob and Dave taking a trip up there this week to look at marinas, will check those. Just got back from a trip to Elk country in PA, friends we met at Erie invited us up to their land was nice saw Bull Elk chasing cows ,first time seeing them up close. A lot of Big Mtns in that area, bennezette and Hicks run area. No cell service or tv ,just camping by a creek, was nice not being connected to technology a few days. Then on way back looked at marinas on Seneca Lake. This week will go up to Syracuse area look at marinas on Ontario, and Onieda, probablly camp a night at Thousand Islands area ,then head over to Niagra Falls ,Four mile state park Olcott area, and check the suggested marinas you guys mentioned on the way. Want to find next years boating area now instead of waiting till spring, easier to get a slip. Wife will be sending out her resume soon so last chance to travel and camp . She expects to be working this winter and next boating season,so we need to find something driveable for weekends next season.

We have cottage on L. Ontario, and I launch regularly at Golden Hill SP (day use only). Olcott has a nice launch, and marina(s); also the best of fishing along the southern shore.

Just got back ,looked at Lake Ontario marinas Olcott,Oak Orchard, and others, all nice areas to boat from. Also Oneida Lake marinas,Brennans marina ,visited Niagra Falls camped at 4 mile State Park on Lake, nice campground big sites to fit boat if needed. Campgrounds at Thousand Island were closed so didn't make it there.Good last camping trip of the season 2 nights down near freezing, warm days. Woman said it was a great season for salmon fishing in Olcott, prices for slip around $1,000 for season or 28 a night or $300 for month for a slip includes electric.Could just launch boat and pull boat out and short drive to 4 mile S.P. and keep boat at site. Not sure what we will do,depends if wife gets job in medical coding field ,if working will only have weekends, not good for long drives.Hope this info helps anybody thinking of fishing the area.
