Lake Mohave Cruise Feb 12-16

Well...maybe we can get a group rate in 83 Dollar Cove!
There is usually a fishing tournament going on when we are there in February...so the fishing must be OK. One year we saw a huge stiper that a guy caught...50 pound range. They plant trout in the winter and that attracts the bass...which gorge themselves on the planted trout. The lake is between Nevada and Arizona...and a license from one state or the other is needed...along with a use stamp from the state you don't have a license from. I don't know if Roxy needs one or not.

Chris,
If I am counting correctly, we can expect so far, 5 Dorys.

That would be about 10 people. I want to make sure I bring enough Tortillas, beef and firewood. Please let me know if I am missing something :|

So did Water Lillie check in and throw in their hat?

On fishing, if I remember right when fishing for stripers on Lake Powell, frozen anchovies are pretty attractive. Got to tie them on the hook though to stay. I'll have to check if an out-of-state license for a few days is cheaper from AZ or NV, then buy the alt stamp.

Hi all, I thought of another question for the veterans of this trip. Do you cook some of your dinners on an open fire on the beach? Are there firepits with grills attached, or should we bring our own makeshift grills?

Chris,

I see that you have me down as a tentative. I will only be coming if one of my buddies backs out on a Death Valley trip. At this time, it still looks like I will be hanging out at Furnace Creek.

Steve

Dora Jean,

Please share with us what you find out re what state it is best to buy the temp fishing license and which to get the alt stamp from.

And what do you use to tie the anchovy on to the hook with?

Thanks,
Jeff

Steve...I don't recall any grills on the beaches. We usually use our grills on the boats...some folks have those Cobb grills that they use on the beach. In the past we have used the covered picnic area at Cottonwood Cove for our BBQ's...there are grills in the picnic area. This was handy because the weather was rainy. Wouldn't hurt to bring a grill if you have one.

Thanks Chris, well now I wish I had one of those Cobb Grills, they sound fantastic. I'll keep looking for one. I have a BBQ in mind, or could just use my propane grill from the boat, I have a stand for it.

Jeff, I heard from a friend that frequents that area. He said cheapest is to buy a license from Ariz and a stamp from Nev. The licenses are cheap for just a few days. There's a special technique to get the anchovies (dead) to attach to the hook, but I use an elastic thread from a fabric store, or could use dental floss.

Wandering Sagebrush.... That is the weekend for the Airheads (motorcycle group) oldest and lowest rally at Furnace Creek...I think several other motorcycle groups will be there also.... I had originally planned on riding my BMW/sidecar rig to Death Valley for the event, but C-Dory cruises are way more fun....
(besides Sue will not ride in the sidecar...wonder why ?)

Yes, many times in days of yore. We used to canoe the river from the dam down with the children and dip in those hot springs - they are great, especially on a cool day. You might want to bring along a swim suit.

Well we made the left turn at Santa Maria with out too much trouble. It took a bit to convince Anne that postponing some 80 degree weather for another week or two isn't so bad. It was the opportunity to cruise with El and Bill and other great C-brats that was the clincher.
Its amazing though where you can end up when you just choose secondary roads off the map to avoid inter states. We are currently about 7000 ft up in the San Bernadino Mtns. Meander really looks kind of out of place at a ski resort surrounded by snow. So much for the warm temp.

If the invitation is still extended Anne and I would like to join the pod for the Mojave cruise. It sounds like fun and Meander needs some water time.

Would anyone know of a secure and inexpensive storage site for Meander? We are going to be wandering around Ariziona for the next couple of weeks and it seems like a waste of fuel to tow Meander through all that desert.
Thanks

Ron

Ron,

I think, but if you tell me the towns name I will know for sure, I am only about 30 miles from you give or take. I am in Apple Valley.

I have a couple acres, fenced, and I keep my boat here and you are welcome to store your boat here also.

Let me know and I will share my #.

Jeff

Ron...great to hear you folks took Bill up on his suggestion! You might consider storing at Lake Mohave...at either Katherine Landing...where most of us will launch...or Cottonwood Cove...a bit north. Both have dry storage...and slips too if you want to be in the water. That way your boat will be in position for the gathering...and you can roam Arizona in the meantime. Don't worry about that 80 degree weather...once you loose that altitude it will warm up...it's been 70-80 in San Diego last few days.

A little geography help for folks planning and navigating...since it's a bit counterintuitive. In this area of the Colorado River...Nevada lies between Arizona and California. Lake Mohave is between Arizona on the east and Nevada on the west. Katherine Landing, Arizona is about 6 miles east and north of Laughlin, Nevada. Cottonwood Cove, Nevada is about 50 miles west and north of Laughlin. Katherine landing will be our main launch ramp for the gathering.

Jeff,
What a wonder offer! Its people like you who make this site so helpful and valuable to all that use it. We have been without internet access for the last couple days. We were just above Apple Valley at Big Bear City (and the ski hill) but are now just near Kingman AZ. We have been getting our "Kicks on Route 66" the last couple of days. Had a great stop at Oatman today and a wonderful dry camp at the top of Sitegreaves pass above Oatman. Wow! I have a very poor connection but will post a picture when we can. Thanks again for the offer and I hope we can meet you in person some day. We found a inside, locked place to store Meander in Needles for only about $20 per week so we went with that. Looking forward to seeing the Mojave cruisers in 10 days. Happy Ground Hog day.
Ron

OK let's make it official. I'll be arriving either late Thursday night or early Friday morning. Laurie can't make it so it will be just me and my dog or possibly a buddy.
You folks still gonna hole up at 83 Dollar Cove?
