King salmon fishing in the San Juan's

roger do you tow back and forth or moore? JC
I moor out there. One month of moorage is about the same as the round trip cost to get the boat there and back. The ferry over is expensive! You can drive around if you have the time

I think this Saturday we will stay at Pt Defiance to keep it local (read: to sleep in after the 4th a little longer) but alreayd have a 3-4 day trip planned for july 18th to the SJ's with a buddy for salmon.

Keep me posted if you guys go out this weekend, want to see some blood in the boats :)

the perk to south sound for me this weekend will be crab. I know the salmon fishing will likely be horrible, lol.

We fished the SJI opener July 1-2. June 30 anchored at Spring Bay, Orcas. Next morning went around corner and fished Obstruction. Obstruction is an outgoing tide place, so we fished a couple hours out of synch. Finally when it changed over, my dad got a king 100' deep on a 3" kingfisher spoon. Local fish feeding on bottom of candlefish. That evening went over to Eagle Bluff on Cypress. Started fishing drop offs. He got another fish. Next day got skunked so we went home. Both fish about 10lbs - one picture in my album. Now my sights are on Winter Harbor BC in a couple weeks. I will be back to SJI on Labor Day.

so we will be out there for three days this weekend. the plan is starting at Eagle Bluff/Obstruction area, then probably stay at FH friday night and possibly work the areas around that island Saturday. not sure about Sunday yet.

West side of Sj should have kings by now. Eagle point, west side of salmon bank or head off shore to Hein bank. Hein bank is weird, you not not fish up and down the bank but out from it at a 90 degrees. Just back and forth from the buoy to a mile west and back. See johns book on that one.

We will be out fishing saturday and sunday, staying in FH.

I've been studying John's book like crazy. I want to keep it as simple as possible because my buddy is not very experienced, but I think it will be a good time regardless. so far the plan is FH for an IPA on friday night so maybe we will see you there.

of course if the fishing ends up stellar at Eagle Bluff it may be hard to pull us that far west

If your already planning to be at FH, I wouldnt bother with Cyprus Island unless its rough and you're looking for protection. It's a bit of a run to Eagle Bluffs, and although it can produce fish, its just not as much of a sure thing as Eagle Point.

thanks Paul, we were going to launch out of anacortes probably friday morning and work our way west, so hitting the closer fishing holes first made sense. Eagle point could be the ticket for Saturday morning for us.

If the current isnt pushing around too much and theres not a bunch of eelgrass and junk in the water, trolling the indian village close to shore is a fun spot. Thats on the NW side of Guemes island and close to Anacortes. Theres some hogs in there sometimes :thup

Agreed. the indian didnt put villages where there were no fish. Same over at Indianola by Jeff Head.

Just remember a few things about kings. Troll fast, 2 knots or 45 degrees on the wire. Troll on the bottom ( in most places) If your wire is down 100ft in 110 ft of wire you are NOT on bottom because of the angle of the wire. Add 15 to 20 ft at a 100ft depth. and dont be afraid to troll in 50 ft or 200ft if bait is there. Our fish last week was in 55 ft

Dog,

Make sure to post report when you return

update:
friday hooked one nice salmon off eagle bluff but lost it at the boat (rookie mistake). then between friday and saturday caught SIX more dogfish between obstruction pass and pt Lawrence, but no more salmon. Saturday the weather was too nasty the first half of the day to cross Rosario so we stayed close the Blakely. that afternoon we had enough fishing and ventured over to Friday Harbor for dinner. Today we motored back to WA Park early and drove home.

in two weeks I go back with my wife, I think we may spend some time trolling along Guemes again on our way to Sucia.

Yes fishing has been slow. We fished Saturday after noon at tide point to eagle bluff on west side of cypress for one 12 king. Fished obstruction pass for nothing, then headed to Friday harbor to meet Don and have dinner. We broke down on the way and had to use the kicker to get there. More on that on another thread.

There were 4 cdorys at the dock. We must have just missed Dog. Sunday morning till 11 I was repairing the Honda then off to waldon to fish. We fished west waldon, pt doughty, Presidents channel all with out any luck. Stopped by Tide point for a hour and after a long nothing and getting real bummed out we tied into a 17 lbs king. Nice fat think fish. That was a 645 last night and we ran to Washington park and home by 9pm.

Fishing as a hole has been slow in the SJ's and around Everett. some fish are being caught but not many.

Tom your weekend is eerily close to mine. I'm shocked I didn't see you at Obstruction or FH. we pulled into FH probably around 3 and parked next to another red CD (a 19 I think) on the E dock. we only stayed a few hours, I wanted to be back on the water headed to Blakely with lots of time to spare and I was just showing my buddy around since he had never been to FH before.
