Okay, C-Brats has provided insight on the kicker-trim topic and I want to thank everyone who contributed. Now, I have a couple more kicker questions:

1. Can a kicker be mounted on the starboard transom of a 25' with a swim-platform on the port side and what type of mount should I be looking at?

2. I've given up on the idea of a one-size fits all "kicker-inflatable-canoe motor" and wonder if a 20 hp would mount without problem. Any thoughts?

I have this bracket http://www.foreandaftmarine.com/3-71091.htm on the stbd stern of the Fan-C-Dory. Never put anything larger the the Honda 8hp on it, but no doubt it will handle a 25. My difficulty is that I trailer and need to take the motor off when the bottom dries off. You can't leave the motor on the bracket when trailering - according to Gerlick.
 
In the interest of keeping things reasonable, please note the difference between 10 hp motors and 15/20 hp motors. The 15/20 motors share the block and everything else. Except the hp ratings.

Looking at the specs in Defender, a Tohatsu 10 (9.9) can weigh up to 90 lbs for electric start and 20" shaft. It has a displacement of 222 cc. The 15/20 engines have 350 cc and advertise 125 lbs for the same configuration, and are slightly bigger physically. Hondas claim their 15/20 (same block) are the same weight as their 10, but I doubt that.

I'd look at the two different motors, because 15/20 does give more push through rough water. I find 10 hp adequate, it was a lot cheaper and because it's lighter I can use it on the dinghy. Don't sell that last point short, because room in a C-25 is at a premium and a second small outboard is hard to store onboard. Please note that outboard prices go by horepower, not what it cost to build. The only difference between the 15 and 20 is the carburetor and (maybe) the cams.

I have the bracket Dave mentioned above. It's a Garelick bracket, the factory installed it and it's worked well. I'm also impressed by the price, but those 4 strokes are heavy. I would assume you can install the outboard on either side, but try and balance out the boat by adding other equipment on the other side (if used.)

And to answer Rob, a mount that moves the engine up and down allows the motor the be out of the water when not in use. You'll appreciate that feature if you ever have to drag your kicker through the water whilst under way.

Steve - hopefully you do not mind a few related questions. I need some education on kickers as well.

I see some kickers mounted directly on the transom next to the main motor, others use a fixed mount, and still others use a mount that moves vertically.

Is a mount necessary only if you have a clearance problem....like trim tabs? What is the benefit of a mount that moves vertically vs. a fixed mount? Is it just so you can keep the motor out of the water without tiliting it?

Hello Steve,

I have the Garelick bracket on the STB side (my swim platform is on the PORT). The kicker is the Tohatsu 9.8. Works well. On my transom, I still need to tilt the kicker up (even with the bracket fully elevated) to keep it out of the water whilst underway. I like the bracket. It is heavy anodized aluminum that should hold up well in the salt water environment. Pics are in Seadation > Seadation Projects > Kicker.

For redundancy, my kicker is manual/electric start (so it has an alternator for backup charging capacity) and completely manual controls so I can either tiller steer from the cockpit (as when trolling or enjoying a slow cruise) or steer from helm using main motor as the rudder. The Tohatsu is rigged to run off the main fuel tanks but I also have a 3 gal aux tank than I can use if I need a backup fuel source. All kicker rigging done by Wefings.

Thanks to SeaDation for the kicker mount photos. The good folks at Washington Marina in DC have asked if there are any other photos of starboard mounted kickers so they can get an idea of optimal placement on the transom.

Any other assorted kicker comments like shaft length, etc., are welcome as well.

You should be able to mount the kicker with a fixed bracket that holds the motor out beyond the trim tab, and when the motor is tilted up it clears the water. No vertical hinge needed if the motor has an extra long shaft. I have a Honda 15 mounted to stb. See photos # 20 & 26 in my main album and #4 in the Trailer tie downs album.
 
If anyone decides they could use a Mini Jacker fixed mount I have one. It would not work on my boat because of the placement of the trim tabs. Others have used this same mount on their boats with no problem.

If interested make me an offer.

Hello Steve,

One other thing about my set up. The vertical pivoting mount allows me to use a 20 inch ("long") shaft kicker rather than the 25 inch ("extra long") shaft required with some of the fixed mounts.

Since the thread topic is motor brackets i am reminded that I have one for sale. It is this one: http://www.westmarine.com/1/1/145-a...-lift-7-5hp-30hp-hp-rating-from-garelick.html and it has been used one time on my former sailboat...we lost the keel on that trip and the boat was skuttled...but we salvaged all the usable parts and this bracket looks a new as the day I installed it.
