What you can do to slow your self down is drag a 5gal bucket behind you. When ever they open Lake Washington for sockeye that is what we do. Slows you right down. Just pull it in when you get a fish on.

You totally have my attention. How in the world does a guy troll for sockeye salmon. Goodness, don't tell me I have to go even slower yet.

Here is a drogue that works like a trolling bucket but is easier to stow. One on each rear cleat will slow you down. There are many varieties of these things.

T.R. I dont know my idle rpm off hand but will look at it next time out. I do think its below 1000. you can not get load up with a four stroke. thats a funtion of a 2 stroke that is not burning hot enough to burn off all the oil. In cold water, like the sound, you can mix a little lite on the oil so you dont have that problem. Ran my everude 70 that way for years and it ran really clean and never loaded up. Also a good tip for two strokes, other then sell it, is to run a can of DE-FOG thru it once a year. really improves how the motor runs. It cleans all the oil and carbon deposits out of the combustion chamber.

Try using a "Sea Anchor". I bought mine at Cabelas for less than $100. It also works great in controling drift in windy conditions. If all else fails, the cheapest way out is to tie a rope onto a 5 gallon bucket and throw it overboard. It will suprise you how much it will slow you down.

You asked aboyt trolling for Sockeye? Well here, when they open the season for them we troll ssllooww . I mean dirt slow. Some people even troll in reverse. The best part is we have good success dragging a bare colored hook behind a flasher. Feel kinda stupid out there doing that, but it does put fish in the boat.

Chuck,

Do you know if that would, could, or should work in the salt? I would be willing to giving it a shot in PWS if it really is successful. I am intrigued. Everyone up here in Alaska just about swear the only way to catch them is in a net or with a snagging hook. In which I agree, are very good ways to catch them in an efficient manner. But, where is the sport in that?

I'm not sure that a bare hook would work in the salt. It is my understanding that when the fish hit the lake they are not really feeding, but that the bare hook is, for the lack of a better word, pissing them off. Others my know more. But a couple of years ago Kathy and I were on a guided fishing trip on the inside passage of Vancover Island and were taking sockeye hand over fist trolling hot pink or bright red hoochies. Good luck

First try trimming the motor that you want to use fishing up so that it is not giving you full thrust, but deep enough to get water for cooling. Take and rig a flasher on about 5 ft. of 40 or 60 #test line hook this line to your cannon ball, drop the line down about 5 ft. Next let your line with your lure out about 25 to 30 ft hook up to your release clip. Then just lower your gear down to what ever depth you want to fish at. Sockeye like slow moving gear with lots of glitter, a dummy flasher on each side, 25 to 28 in. leader, pink or bubble gum hoochy, slow and straigtht and you should be in for some fun. We have taken lots of Springs with this gear as well. I use 40# test for my leaders.

This is good information. I know a spot about an hour from Seward that I have found large schools of jumping reds and all I could do is snag them (which is perfectly legal, but not very sporting). Thanks for sharing this technique. Also, it never occurred to me to tilt the motor up - I am going to try this for sure. Thanks again.
