Kicker Autopilot

Island Ranger

New member
I'd like to add remote steering to the 9.9 kicker on the back of Island Ranger - R-25. I can't connect to my Raymarine system, cause I can't figure a decent way to connect the rudder to the kicker.

One extra requirement - I want to be able to remove the kicker from time to time. I don't plan to leave it on the boat and I move it from the swim step to the rail each time I use it. So...

Is easy to remove the TR-1 Gold autopilot? The pictures I've seen make it look quite difficult..

Has anyone any information about the Panther remote steering?http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0043168014744a.shtml

How about the TrollEze? http://www.goetztroleze.com/

Thanks,
Mac

Mac,
I have the TR 1 gold on my 9.9. It works fine and is a real help when fishing alone. I don't think it would be easy to rig it up for quick removal. Because it has hydraulic as well as electrical connections you'd have to rig quick disconnects for both. Its probably doable but more work than its worth.

I had a TR-1 on my Hewescraft. I was told by the factory after I had it (the TR-1) repaired that I should disconnect it when trailering (trailering caused the damage). I sold it right after that so I am not sure how you disconnect it, but I would recommend talking to the factory guys. Before they were bought out by Garmin they were very accessible and helpful. Dunno about now.

I second what Ron said about the TR-1. I dont' have any experience with the other products.

Mac,

I would bet that you could put "Fuel Line" quick connects on the hydraulics for the TR-1. I have to wonder though how often you would end up having to bleed the system.

IFISH.Net has a thread that used to be watched by the guys at TR-1. You might ask your question there.

Thanks Gary -

Someone already asked my exact question on Ifish - and yep, they say they offer quick disconnect fittings. Hurray!

Now..to start saving my pennies...

Mac, don't forget that the TR-1 also has throttle control so you will have to route and re-route the wire each time you take it off. Maybe it won't be a big deal though. Just depends on where you mount the pump I suppose. Mine's mounted in the lazerette.

Mac,

You might consider locking the kicker straight ahead and using the big rudder. If that works you could then just get the TR-1 Gladiator instead. Then you can use it for fishing AND cruising. ;)

Is the throttle connect an electric or mechanical connect? I'm assuming I can use quick connects for electrical as well as hydraulic. I already have to deal with the electric start / battery connect anyway, but if the throttle is a mechanical linkage, this could get complicated

I tried locking the motor and steering with the rudder - doesn't work. Not enough control - the rudder only works at low speeds when the prop is pushing water to it....

The throttle connect is electrical. It is the only electrical connection to the kicker from the TR!. The other is the two hydraulic hoses. If you can get quick disconnects from TR than it should be straght forward. Hell the #$#%&*******'s that stole my first 9.9 didn't even need the quick connects to remove the kicker in a hurry! They just cut everything off. Of course the reconnecting was a bit of a pain.
