Johnson 8hp Problem

Would appreciate assistance from anyone with experience with this 1988 Johnson kicker I still use. It seems to have a stuck throttle grip and I'm not having luck getting the assembly apart to inspect.

The twist grip throttle on the steering handle is interlocked/interconnected with the gear shift lever to prevent shifting at high throttle settings or reving the engine up too high when in neutral.

Try setting the throttle up and down with the gear shift in neutral, forward, and reverse and see how it works (motor not running).

Take the upper cowl off and check out the linkage that controls all of this and look for problems.

Too difficult to describe all the possible problems.

Good Luck!

The other problem that these develop is salt water gets into the handle and salt/grease builds up.. I have had to take several apart when used on dinghies and clean, re-grease. Look at all of the linkage and how it translates from the rotary to the linear. They vary depending on the size and year. But all should be able to be cleaned, and re-lubed, with grease.

Thanks. I tracked it down to a seized throttle cable. Haven't had to use it in 8 years. Ordered a new cable. Hope I can get all the pieces back together same way. Cable does not budge in its housing.
