Jacari Maru, Northbound to Alaska

Hi all,

We have been in Wrangell now for four days, and will probably be here a few more. We have had low clouds and rain since we got here.

Next, we are headed for the west coast of Prince of Wales Island as far south as Craig.

I refueled in Ketchikan, paid $3.02/gallon for #2 diesel, took on 162 gallons. I could have made the whole trip from Everett to Ketchikan on the fuel aboard and had 100 gals left!

Arrroooooooogaaaaaaaaaahhhh :D LOL Well, Larry and Nancy do rock! Mom and I have enjoyed their company for over a week now. Did not get to do all we really wanted here in "Wangell" ("welcome-ta-wangell" where you "wangelled" -- LOL, that is what Nancy said anyway) but we are going around POW (aka "PO-DUB") Island together! They are gettin a jump on us today, we are departing in the RF (RedFox) probably Tuesday, to meat up and do the big island together. We will work on more of this to post latter here. I honor Larry because he has been my champion on all my sites for several years now. How awesome it is to finally meet, and NO longer in a virtual way!

Larry at the helm of the old famous "RedFox" Classic made some innerestin remarks about how very well she handles... I mentioned if they wanted a Classic to jump on one and never let it go. I predict them to be the real "cult" boat! of all Toland time.

Observations about the Classic C-Dory. They do not wash out in a full-on-turn like the Cruiser can do, they seem more solid and possibly ride better to! I don't know if that is because of my heavier fourstroke engines, or because of the narrower and perfectly flat bottom, but my boat also has far more power than he had on his cruiser, to make the comparison. I can rip around empty or full, go into full-on-turn traveling near 30 knots and have NO WASH OUT! Anyway, now I love all C-Dorys new or old, but the Classic is in its own class I recon.

Alright, nuffamyramblin, TTFN! and the rest of ya, don't bug me!
:xtongue

Oh yeah,

Lots of fun was had driving "The Fox". I like it!! Greg and his mom were great hosts during our stay in Wrangell.

We have just returned to Ketchikan from our run around Prince Of Wales island. We got to hang out with the fishing fleet in Craig. Craig is the 'metropolis' of P O W with a population of under 2,000! We anchored in several very remote places and rounded the south end of P O W island on the way back to Ketchikan. Saw several humpback whales, many sea otters and pink salmon jumping everywhere.

After a few days in Ketchikan, we will do the Behm canal including Misty Fiords and then start the return run south thru Canada.

Hey Larry & Miss Nancy: Looks to me your are loving life on the liquid highway. I am about the hit the hardball heading NW to Oak Harbor to get my new ride. Sure wished we could have traveled a bit together but this time it will not happen. Have for sure enjoyed our times around the fires in the hotel and other things at the SBS each of the last few years. Just the whole C-Brat gang thing is way cool. Glad you got to meet Greg and his Mother. Someday I hope to meet him too...but he don't leave up there.

Cheers on your wonderful trip, and may your laughs be many and your troubles few on your journey.

Safe Travels and see you some time later.

Patrick,

Yes, our trip has been fabulous!! Congratulations on your new boat!! Hope to see you at the SBS in 08!!

Greg,

We saw Knotty Sea on their way thru Ketchikan.

Our trip around the south end of P O W was great and definitely 'out in the boonies'!!

Larry and Nancy.

PS There is a 2005 CD 22 cruiser for sale here in Ketchikan, for $55,000.

OK then! We enjoyed the heck out of the Behm Canal and Misty Fjords! We did not see another boat there except little Boston Whalers out of the fishing resort...well, we did see one sailboat, but that was it. This is some really spectacular scenery!

Hi Brats,

We are in Ocean Falls now. Spent two days running south from Ketchikan(no Behm Canal this year) to Prince Rupert where we checked into customs and left town due to no slips available. The Grenville and Tolmie took two days. We stopped in Hartley Bay and Klemtu, both native towns, and last night we anchored in a beautiful marine park south of Klemtu.

We will spend a few days getting down to the Broughtons, several days there and then down to Campbell River for resupply.

Our summer is going great, hope yours is too!

Larry and Nancy

Larry I got your phone message last week but not until morning and I could not get thru by then. Susan say hi and wants to know when you will be back? hope you are having a good time.

Tom,

Hi to Susan from both of us. We plan to keep boatin' till Oct 1. My slip is sublet till then. The last part of our trip will be in The Gulf Islands and Victoria area. We might make it to the Sequim gathering. I'll call you when we get cell phone coverage.

Larry

Hi all,

After three days at Ocean Falls, we had had enough bug bites (black flies, and no-see-ums) to last several years.

We are now at Shearwater waiting out a weather system. Winds in Queen Charlotte Sound were reported at 29 knots with gusts to 34 knots!

The Broughtons are our next stop.

Larry and Nancy

Greetings,

After waiting for two days for the forecast gale to arrive, it did with strong wind and rain(continuous rain!) on Wed am. We finally left Shearwater about 1:00 pm shortly after Meander left.

We stopped at Namu for the night, and then on to Fury Cove Thurs night.

Yesterday we crossed Queen Charlotte Sound in mild wind conditions, but the ocean swell was 3-4 ft. We arrived at Blunden Harbour and spent a pleasant night in company with two humpback whales.

This morning while sitting drinking coffee and reading, the boat lurched. I got up to see what made the wake and saw a whale diving UNDER our boat! Blunden Harbour is only about 30 ft deep! The whales then spent an hour chasing herring around the harbour and dove under the boat AGAIN!

Finally, they took off and we headed out for Greenway Sound Resort where I am posting this by Wi-Fi. The cost of the wireless is included in the moorage ($1.00 per foot/per day).

Next stop will be Shawl Bay Marina or Echo Bay.

Now to go eat a salmon filet given to us by a nice neighbor boat.

Greetings Brats,

We left Greenway Sound and decided to head south. A 20+ knot blow at the dock at Greenway convinced us that summer was over in the Broughtons. We stopped at Lagoon Cove for the night, a nice place, run by nice people.

The next day we went down the Johnstone Strait to Cordero Lodge for some excellent German cooking. The next day we went on thru the Dent, Gillard, and Yuclata rapids to Squirrell Cove in Desolation Sound.

After two days of getting used to warm weather and lots of boats anchored all around we went to Powell River's marina, Westview.

The next stop was Princess Louisa Inlet. A beautiful place with great visiting with people on the dock. One boat was a trailer boat, all 35 ft of it. The owners have bought a used 18 wheeler and trailer to move their 12 ft wide sailboat!! They trailered up from California. That gets me to thinking about a trailer for my 37!

From P. L. the next overnight was at anchor in Pender Harbor, then across the Georgia strait, thru Gabriola Pass to anchor at Clam Bay, Kuper Island.

After Kuper Is we went to Montigue Harbor for a couple of nights and today to Friday Harbor. Back in the USA again!!

As we approached the Nanaimo area, the rude, behavior of large powerboats started. There was lots of yelling on the VHF. This rude behavior has continued to Friday Harbor.

More people need to follow the Brats motto, Just Be Nice.

We will refuel and restock the food locker and then head back to Canada for a while. We still might make the Sequim gathering, it depends on the weather.

Good boatin to yah!!

Larry and Nancy

Hi Brats,

After a long summer we are home. While we were in Friday Harbor my trimaran sailboat project (located in So California)finally sold, so we cut our trip short and headed for the barn!

We now have to go to California of a couple of weeks to transfer the project and visit family.

On our way from Friday Harbor to Everett we stopped in Cornet Bay overnight and Dave on Plan C and his friends on a CD 22 Angler came into the dock. That was a very pleasant, unplanned get together!

Our trip was just short of 90 days and also just short of 2,000 miles. Living aboard and travelling was easy and comfortable. The weather and sea conditions are the primary concerns, with deciding where to go and what to see the next challenges. We find that being on the land is more difficult!

Larry and Nancy

Glad your home and not waterloged toboot  For you and Nancy, a pic... the rest of ya, don't bug me
:bat :bat
The storms are here and fierce as ever!!!, the water made me stay home and get my davit built --- at long last!! :crook I'll be sharin it on my site soon :idea

Greg

Wouldn't waste my energy trying to bug you, but sure like the photo of the Redfox and the Jacari Maru.

Larry and Nancy

We thoroughly enjoyed your sharing of voyage. Twice we have gone almost your amount of distance cruised this trip, but in a much shorter time period. We are sure looking forward to when we too can do a summer like you.

Jay

Jay,

Our summer trip was just under 90 days and also just under 2,000 miles. Most of the trip was run at 7 knots plus or minus the current.

Compared to our c-dory, we just crawl along now. I like 6-7 hour runs traveling 40 to 50 miles per day.

We have adapted to the different style of cruising. We now seek out anchorages instead of docks and more remote routes as we don't need fuel docks from Everett, WA to Ketchikan, AK. We cook breakfast and lunch underway. The slower boat also provided better sightseeing. Like sitting in your living room while the world goes by outside!
