Jacari Maru, Northbound to Alaska

Greetings,

After much preparation, we are leaving Everett today on our way to Alaska.

The route is thru the San Juans, Gulfs, Desolation Sound, and on up the Johnstone thru the Broughtons. After that, it will be the standard inside passage to Ketchikan.

We estimate being 15 days underway with about 7 days rest or harbor days along the way.

Any Brats are welcome to stop in for a visit and a cuppa. Or just wave as you fly by! We only travel at 7 knots, so catching us is easy.

We will be in Alaska as long as the weather holds up, returning thru Canada in late August or September. We might make the gathering at Sequim.

Larry,

Have a safe trip. I sure like the new trawler!! We will be trailering up to Prince Rupert on or around the 8th of July and launching on or around the 11th. We hope to see you up in Alaska. We don’t have a firm itinerary but plan to hit Skagway and see Ken in Elfin Cove. Along the way hit the usual Ketchikan, Meyers Chuck, Wrangell, Le Conte, Petersburg, Tracy Arm, Ford’s Terror, Pop over to Sitka, you get the idea. I’ve only flown into Ketchikan and ferried up to Wrangell, so this is our “first trip”. Any can’t miss places on your list that you could share with us?

I’ll PM you with a cell phone # and our MMSI#

Thanks,

Don

Don,

We'll be looking for you! I have heard that the west coast of Prince of Wales is nice.

We are leaving the dock now.

Larry and Nancy,

It was great to see you today just transiting through Thatcher Pass on your way north. Kate and I and a grandson were returning to Guemes Is. after an overnight at Sucia Is.

I was asked to pass along Larrys hello to the brats. Keep us posted as you are able to find connections.

Larry & Nancy,

YOU BOTH ROCK!!! Way to get on it and get going!

Enjoyed seeing you both at Poulsbo and now I'm kicking myself for not taking a tour of your boat. Oh well...hope to see you in Sequim and I can peek then.

Truly wishing you a most wonderful and safe journey!

Thanks Larry and Nancy. Prince of Wales Island is one place I didn't purchase paper charts. We have 25 paper charts of most of the rest of Southeast AK though. I think we will explore PoWI next trip.

How about an update on your trip? We are probably about a week out from Prince Rupert (we will be trailering from Vancouver WA to PR). I'll start a new thread just before we leave early next week.

Thanks again,

Don and Dee

Brats,

We made it! Got into ketchikan today at 7:00 pm. Sixteen days underway, two of which were laydays. Our big boat makes the transits easy. Many days powering against 15-20 knot winds, no problem, maintaining 7 knots in livingroom comfort! We discovered the joy of taking a hot water shower on our boat at the end of a day at anchor in one beautiful cove or another.

Fuel consumption has been under 2 gals/hour(diesel) at 7 knots while bringing half of our house with us. No need to run from one fuel dock to another.

We will be in Ketchikan for a few days and then on to Wrangell.

More later.

Cool! All you need now is a satellite connection for your TV and internet connection for your living room!

Larry,
Congratulations on the success of your passage. It is something Toni and I want to do sometime in the future so I monitor your posts and others traveling north. More details on your cruise would be appreciated. I figure approximately 900 miles in 14 days at 7 knots means you must have ran 8-10 hours per day. Exciting stuff, please keep us informed.

RUSS and all the Brats,

The milage shown on our gps is 703.1 Everett to Ketchikan.

Our stops were: Cornet Bay marine park dock; Montague Harbor; Bargain Bay, Pender Harbor; Refuge cove dock; Cordero Lodge dock(two nights); Port Mc Neill dock(two nights); Blunden Harbor; Fury cove(on the north side of Queen Charlotte Sound); Codville lagoon; Klemtu dock; Hartley Bay dock; McMicking Island anchorage; Port Simpson anchorage(north of Prince Rupert); Bar Harbor marina, Ketchikan.

Several days were 60+ miles and 10 hours or so.

This boat allows us to bypass towns and go from anchorage to anchorage if we want. I haven't refueled yet, but I expect we have used approx 200 gallons enroute. Marine diesel is somewhat cheaper than gasoline, and we started by fueling in Poulsbo in march at $2.47/gal. We topped off at Refuge cove at $1.17 CDN per liter which is not cheap. We later found out that Port Mc Neill has the best price at around $.85 CDN per liter.

We will be here in Ketchikan for a week and then on to Wrangell.

We have not found any free wi-fi yet. I am using a friends computer in Ketchikan.

WiFi is cheap but not free at the Thomas Wash Basin (the laundromat at Thomas Basin), of course you are at Bar Harbor, wrong end of town. Try a netstumbler type program, I'll bet there is some free access point in the ether not too far away...

Sounds like a great trip. We just got back from a 7 day NCL cruise to Ketchican, Tracy Arm, Juneau and Skagway. Had a blast and the scenery is 2nd to none. Enjoy.

hey, a big, fancy, cruise ship slid by us a few days ago in Icy Straights, I wondered if any C-Brats where aboard, where you?

Stop in at Elfin Cove, I'll hook you up with the internet

Larry,
Thanks for keeping us posted. You are living my dream. BTW, love that fuel burn rate. It was a pleasure to meet you at SBS last year and thanks for sharing your knowledge, then and now. WE are wishing you the greatest trip, travel safe, and we really hope to see you in Sequim this fall.

Brats,

We have had a great week in Ketchikan visiting old friends and enjoying a very friendly town.

Next stop is Wrangell. The transit will take two or three days.

Any Brats in the neighborhood, watch for our trawler, and stop in for a cuppa and a chat.

Larry and Nancy
