Insurance

For all TomCat owners we are curious as to who you have as an insurer and what is your payment. We called a few companies but no one seemed sure just how to price our policy as the boat was so unusual. We have Geico and pay almost $700 a year. Our Cat is an ‘06.
We had one claim in 2014 when the marina roof collapsed on our boat so not our fault but the marinas never pay for anything.
We feel our policy is high but just checking.
Thanks in advance.

We have had good luck with Progressive.

They have been very competitive price wise. They also insure my motorcycles. Their claim service on one of my motorcycles was excellent. Quick settlement, treated with respect and they didn't try to nickle and dime me on the coverage.

We're with Progressive also, but newer tomcat, higher replacement, so ours runs about $1150.
YMMV depending on your choice of deductible, coverage and zip code.

I don't know what your Tom Cat is worth? When I owned a C-Dory 22' I tried three or four companies over the 13 years I owned her and they all fell short of my expectations. We bought a new boat for $176.000 plus the cost of trailer $12,000 and pay $867 a year. Stay away from carriers that also insure homes, cars, life and even your dog? You need a carrier that just does watercraft.

We just picked up our new 2020 Tom Cat this Jan. We went through AAA which farms it out to progressive. We are at $705.00 a year.

You jump in and buy insurance for a price usually staying about the same, but
maybe increasing slightly after a year or so (at first they entice you with their
low premium..., then afterwards their costs have changed...).

After just a few years, your boat has depreciated, maybe 30% or so, but not your
insurance premium. ( ! )

Is this our cost of ''protection" or something else?

Aye.

I'm not convinced I shouldn't buy my boat insurance from a multi line company. My previous sailboats were insured thru State Farm, competitive premiums and excellent service. We had one boat off the trailer on I 55 north of St. Louis, another burned in front of our house. No issues with either, settled for agreed value on both.

Here is a depressing story.

Lesson learned.
