Installed a Keel Guard

Sue and I just finished...and it came out pretty good...I was sure worried that it would have a wobble or bubble ....but it worked just like the instructions said...

We bought a 6' blue Keel Guard Kit...comes with the glue, a sanding pad, an applicator tool and a CD (that we did not watch)... we just read the instructions and went to it... 6' is all you can put on a 22' C-Dory...it starts just under the bow cleat and runs all the way to the fiberglass keel...actually about 2" beyond that, I just cut a notch at the end so it would go around the fiberglass rise of the keel... it totally covers that brass keel strip and it's leaky screws...so I will never have to worry about those anymore... once it is set...forget it...even superman could not tear it off...it's there...done..fin.

I bought it on Amizon for $111. delivered... it's cheaper in white...colors are a few $$ extra... (Sue's credit card...and she did most of the work)

Fun project...

That is what i had intended doing, adding a Keel Guard over the Brass Keel Strip. I beach the boat almost every trip out and always worry about the Keel Strip Screws coming out. I am not sure how to add a Keel Guard now that i will be bottom painting my boat. I will look on Amazon and check out the prices. Tug

Have considered doing the same even though we rarely if ever beach the boat, there just isn’t that many places out in Prince William Sound good for beaching; with the Keel Guard I would certainly feel better about it when we do.

Thanks for the post project feedback.

I did the same last summer after Karl posted about his leaking brass guard. I pulled the brass guard, however and filled the holes with thickened WM epoxy before installing the Keel-Guard. Confucius say; "Man with holes on bottom of boat often end up sunk".

Well, he really didn't say that but you get the point.

Pretty straight forward install. The hardest part was making sure it lined up evenly on both sides as I stuck it on. The tool provided to press the guard down provides a nice workout for your fingers/hands however. IIRC I used the 6' one too (on a 25).

I hope it holds up for you. I installed the Keel Guard when I fist got my 2007 cd22. After about a year, it started coming loose at each end. It comes loose from the rubber and 3m material. I am sure I'm not making myself clear. The 3m adhesive is still firmly attached but the rubber part is coming loose. This tells me that I did nothing wrong in the prep or application. I took the brass strip off and filled the screw holes before I installed the Keel Guard.

It has a life time guarantee.... heck at the very least they should send you some super glue to re-stick it...probably some 5200 would do it... if you have patience to hold it together for several days while it drys.

No holes, Confucius say… but you still have holes, just filled in. Back out those screws, do the proper sealing procedure, re-attach the brass guard and overlay the keel guard, it is shaped to accept it. Confucius also say two keel guard better than one.

I have liked the Keel Guard idea too. Even thought about cutting a slot in it to go over the bow ring, and running the KG all the way up to the deck-hull seem. They just don't have or make the right color of red, and the white doesn't look that good on the off-white hull. "Picky picky" some body said. Oh well...........

Confucius also say: man who go to bed with itchy asshole, wake-up with smelly finger...

Nothing directed at you, just meant to cause a laugh...
